Bobby Hebert’s Questions Were Legitimate, Should Have Come From Someone Else Says Bob Ryan

by on Jan. 19, 2012, under Sports

Last week, after watching his LSU Tigers team get completely dominated by the Alabama Crimson Tide, losing the BCS national championship game, 21-0, head coach Les Miles did what all coaches do nowadays, walk to the media room for the press conference. Playing in the SEC, Miles knew this wouldn’t be a walk in the park as the media would ask how this fairy tale season could come to a crashing halt with such a poor performance. He just didn’t know the attack was going to come so close to the program.

The first question was by former New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert who asked, “Coach, did you ever consider bringing in Jarrett Lee? Now, I know Alabama’s defense is dominant, but come on, that’s ridiculous, five first downs!” This question needed to be asked especially how ineffective starting quarterback Jordan Jefferson played. However, being more tactful in posing the question and not having an emotional stake in the game would have been better. Hebert has ties to the LSU football program. His son, T-Bob, plays on the offensive line for the Tigers.

Interestingly, Hebert defended his actions while doing an interview with USA Today stating, “I’m not a journalist. The credential that I have is that I played 15 played years of pro football. I was like an extension of the fans that finally got into a press conference. Maybe I shouldn’t have given my opinion a couple times.”

Hebert could and should have handled the situation better. Sure, he was frustrated, but to allow his emotions to get the better of him is unacceptable especially since he had access that most fans aren’t privileged too. Had Hebert just asked the first part of his question everything would have been fine. The fact he continued using the word ridiculous multiple times is where he crossed the line.

Bob Ryan, longtime columnist for the Boston Globe and frequent guest on ESPN programming, has attended countless press conferences and recently spoke with the Victor and Matt Show on 110SportsPodcast.com about the situation involving Miles and Hebert, “The fact his son’s involved is inappropriate. He should have excused himself and saved that for beer and cigars with the boys at the local pub. Now, was he right? Sure he was right. Les Miles coached that game in a brain lock, but I don’t think it’s appropriate for someone who has direct involvement with the team to be asking that. The questions were legitimate, but they should have come from someone else.”

If Miles had made a switch at quarterback and put Lee in for Jefferson, knowing Lee’s struggles against the Crimson Tide’s defense in his career he probably would have taken flake for that as well. It’s unfortunate for coaches now as every move and decision is dissected. In a sense, it’s a lose-lose situation. Big time football coaches like Miles know there will be scrutiny, but they hope the attack isn’t coming so close to home.

    Mr. Rodriguez,
Although I agree with you that the question maybe should have come from someone else, given his personal involvement, NO ONE IN THE MEDIA had the nuts to ask it. The timing may have been bad, the question a bit harsh under the circumstances, yet Bobby said what most of us were thinking (and in fact screaming at the television during the game). WTF?????? Why isn’t someone else given a chance to make a difference? Why are we NOT throwing the ball down the field? Why aren’t we trying something, ANYTHING to push the ball ahead? Bama’s defense was formidable, but we took no forward steps to outsmart it. We had a plethora of opportunities to try something different. No trickeration from “The Mad Hatter” at all. Spencer Ware and Russell Sheppard were both very accomplished quarterbacks in high school and could have been used as such to fake a running play (none of which worked the entire game) and throw a pass from an end around or toss sweep.  Long term fans and alums like myself were having fits that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but plain vanilla plays were run and zero chances were taken, even when we were hopelessly way behind in the fourth quarter. What did they have to lose? I’m sure that Bobby Hebert (as were the entire Tiger Nation) was screaming mad at the way the game was coached and let his emotions out at a bad time. Frustrated? YES. But, we still have not heard one single legitimate reason to justify the poor coaching.
In spite of it all, I am proud as hell at the season we had and will continue to support my team. I am an LSU Tiger fan for life.

      Bill B,
I’m a Bama fan, but ya’ll (LSU fans) have every right to be mad as hell.
I’ve thought the exact same thing you wrote. I’ve never seen anything close to it, when two teams were so close in talent. I kept thinking through most of the game and I told my buddies that crazy SOBesomething (Hatter) has probably got us right where he wants us. When we were ahead by 12, I assumed he had found something in the rule book and was about to score on a 13 point play. NOTHING,….. don’t stand there and take it like a little bgirl. Hell, do something if it’s wrong, we saw the definition of insane. Flea flicker, statue of liberty, quick kick, anything,,, globetrotter figure eight, maybe a couple of long passes??? you think!!! I’m happy we won, but I would have rather won against someone who would stand up and fight. Maybe there is something that we don’t know, but it was so pitiful I can’t give your coach the benefit of the doubt. I would say that he just got outcoached, but that would assume there was any coaching on LSU’s sideline.

I  always  knew there were  intelligent  classy  well spoken Alabama TIDE Nation fans .. Bill B  empathy  is ah  fantastic  example..   He knows  the heart break  Tiger Nation  suffered  .. He recognized the obvious … He sticks  to the FACTS.  The Facts mam,  just the Facts.  And  FACTs are simple.
Les Miles is ah mediocre coach, he  is  also ah arrogant yankee.
As long as Les Miles  is  the head coach  at  LSU  Tiger Nation will continue  to tear itself  apart  from  the inside out.
