Vic’s Picks: Matt Leinart, Rich Rodriguez, Alabama-Auburn

Saturday, November 26th, 2011
  • Now that quarterback Matt Schaub is out for the rest of the season with a foot injury, the Houston Texans are turning to backup Matt Leinart with the hope he can pick up where Schaub left off. The Texans, coming off a bye, are 7-3 and in the driver seat to make the playoffs as they lead their division. Even with the extra week of preparing, it will be interesting to see how the former Heisman Trophy winner does as his career thus far in the NFL has not been that impressive. After being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, Leinart was the starter, but eventually lost his job to Kurt Warner, who led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl. At his time in the desert, Leinart was seen in pictures partying with celebrities like Nick Lachey and being in a hot tub with a handful of women. Leinart will be using the remaining games this season as an audition to hopefully land a starting gig with a new team next year. By now the former USC quarterback realizes that it wasn’t as easy like in his college days when he would throw a five-yard screen pass and watch fellow Trojan Reggie Bush break tackles and run away from the defense en route to an 80-yard touchdown. If Leinart continues to study the game there will be little doubt he could become a steady signal caller, but if history repeats itself, he may find himself a backup for the remaining part of his career.
  • Rich Rodriguez was named the new head coach of the Arizona Wildcats on Tuesday, ending a 41-day search. It was an interesting hire from Greg Byrne just in terms of Rodriguez having no ties in recruiting or coaching west of Dallas. For the Wildcats, their two biggest recruiting bases are California and Texas. He did have success at West Virginia and his three-year stint at Michigan was a disaster because from day one they never really accepted him because he wasn’t a “Michigan man.” He had problems at both schools with the NCAA, but avoided any major violations. The question becomes which coach are the Wildcats getting: the one at West Virginia where he led his alma mater to new heights or the one at Michigan which started hot each season, only to see the season end on a losing streak? Arizona, as a football program is more like West Virginia, which may suit his needs better. Only time will tell if this hire was a good one, but for now it looks like Byrne wanted a home run and ended up with a ground rule double.
