Here’s to hoping the BCS gets it right with four-team playoff for college football

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

College football fans have to be happy with the news coming out last week regarding the revamping of the current BCS system. Some version of a four-team playoff looks like it will be passed through and go into effect for the 2014 season. Most agree the current format needs to go and probably a total remodel of college football’s postseason would be best but we will settle for the “facelift” that it appears we will get.

Sorry for being skeptical, but I’m still a little worried the power brokers in college football may still screw this one up. A couple of wishes: let the increased revenue benefit the schools, not the bowl directors; host semi-final games on campus sites (Attention SEC: get ready to host these games!); figure a way to really have a playoff that consists of the four best teams in the land. Seems simple, right?

Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports columnist and author of “Death to the BCS,” spoke to 110SportsPodcast.com about which playoff format will be most likely passed. “I think what will probably get through are the top four teams not the conference champions, but the bowl lobby will be strong enough to hold out and get access to these games – quite incredibly.” The NCAA has always outsourced the postseason and if the “bowl lobby” does get access, bowl directors generally make the largest profit and games would not be hosted on campus sites rather at some large NFL stadium in a bigger city.

“All that said, my biggest thing is that if you have the top four teams, which is what I would prefer over the conference champs, don’t complicate it, we have a playoff,” Wetzel, the longtime anti-BCS guy continued to say. “We get to watch the games; for 99% of people it’s a TV show you just want to watch that double header and it’s going to go.”

So, yes, we’re are getting a playoff in college football. It may not be perfect, actually let me re-phrase that, it most likely will not be perfect, but it is a great step in the right direction.

“It will be exciting, it will be awesome, 2014 will be the best season in college football history, it will keep getting better,” Wetzel said. “This will be a huge success and as it succeeds they will probably expand it if the next generation of guys are less set in their ways see how much excitement there is to it.”
