Vic’s Picks: Mike Stoops, Theo Epstein, Chicago Cubs

Saturday, October 15th, 2011
  • After seven and a half seasons at the helm of the Arizona football program, head coach Mike Stoops was relieved of his duties on Monday by the university and athletic director Greg Byrne. The move was made after 10-straight loses to BCS opponents. From this standpoint, this record is simply unacceptable and warrants the dismal. The unfortunate thing for Stoops is Arizona is a basketball school. Hoops will always be the main event in Tucson. With Byrne pulling the trigger and deciding to take the program in a new direction he’ll have to make football a priority. Translation: upgrade the facilities and be willing to spend money on a coaching staff. Arizona’s football staff, including Stoops, were well under paid not only from a national level, but from the conference perspective as well. By making this move midseason with still a very slim chance of making a bowl game shows the administration is willing to throw this season away and jeopardize next year’s recruiting class. The speculation of the new coach has already begun and if Byrne wants to make the home run hire he needs a coach that has established himself already. Only problem with that is that an elite level coach will not uproot his family and move to the desert for mediocre facilities and not much of a pay increase. Former athletic director Jim Livengood was unable to land a coach with head coaching experience back in 2004 and settled for the hottest assistant at the time. Now, eight years later Byrne embarks on his own coaching search with the hopes of landing the guy to get the Wildcats to its first Rose Bowl. Let’s hope Byrne’s next coaching decision is better than his last.
  • The Chicago Cubs might have taken a huge step forward in ending their century-plus long championship drought with the hire of general manager Theo Epstein from the Boston Red Sox. Imagine the legacy of Epstein if he were to win World Series titles first in Boston then win it all with Cubs. There is no guarantee that the streak will end, but if there is one guy who could do it Epstein would be a safe bet. By spending time in a big market like Boston it will prepare him for an equally big market of Chicago. He has experience in negotiating deals that have brought in some big names such as Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez just to name a few. This will come in handy when the Cubs make a serious run at St. Louis’ Albert Pujols and Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder, both who are free agents at the end of the season. If the Cubs’ organization is serious about making a run for a championship they’ll need to spend some money and land either Pujols or Fielder. Getting a manager who can manage big names and knows the pressures of winning with a passionate fan base is also essential. Maybe, just maybe former Red Sox skipper, Terry Francona, might just get a call.
