Audio: Josh Luchs says most agents lose money after the 3rd round of the NFL draft

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Listen below to hear Josh Luchs, former sports agent, discuss a theory Lou Holtz has voiced about agents during his time at ESPN. Holtz believes players should get an offer from a team on their own and then pay an agent 50% from whatever they can get on top of that initial offer. Luchs says most agents lose on their initial deal with a client because after the 3rd round of the draft the commission check will not cover expenses that have already been spent and invested into that prospect. Staggering lengths agents will go to get clients: Employing the find a ‘fat chick’ method to ‘ghosting’ online

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Sports agents have long been notorious for going to somewhat crazy lengths to obtain new clients. Most of it was a mystery until Josh Luchs decided to write his tell-all book about his career as a NFL agent.

Luchs told 110SportsPodcast.com earlier this week a story that was published in his book, “Illegal Procedure,” about a strategy he was taught called “finding the fat chick” when he first entered the industry that led to successfully finding players on campus’ which would help eventually sign the prospect.

“I hope that didn’t offend any people out there, but here’s what it is: Essentially, I was using it as an analogy. When I first started in the industry back in 1990, I was taught in order to find the players I was looking for; it wasn’t like today, if you didn’t have a phone number you had to spend the money to get on a plane, fly across country and you basically land in a city, head to the school and I was always told to go find the ‘fat chick.’ The ‘fat chick’ is some girl who is sitting down near the locker room, she is usually wearing a warm-up suit from the university and she’s right outside of that locker room area. She knows what every player is doing, she knows where they are all hanging out, she knows their class schedule, she knows where they live, she knows everything. You chum up to that fat chick and she would tell you everything you would need to know within 15 minutes at any university. Once I find the ‘fat chick,’ I can find the player that I’m looking for.

“Nowadays, with social media, all you have to do is create a fake persona, it’s called ghosting. You create an identity online, usually you pluck a picture of some good looking girl that is not wearing very much and you use that as your profile picture and you friend request the player. Almost every single time – based upon the photo – the guy is accepting your friend request. And when he does accept your request – it’s like a GPS. He puts down where he’s going, who he’s hanging out with, he’s telling you all the people in his inner circle and it is a heck of a lot easier to track him down. I call it the modern day ‘fat chick.’”
