Kansas adding Charlie Weis sits atop most puzzling college football hires

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Bruce Feldman, senior college football columnist for CBSSports.com, just shrugged his shoulders.

That was his reaction when he learned that Kansas named Charlie Weis its head football coach.

The hiring was a little surprising because Weis had just returned to the college game a year after basically being forced out as offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. It wasn’t that long ago when Weis was considered one of the hottest coaching prospects. “Now you’re taking a guy who had a pretty unspectacular stint at Florida where he did basically nothing with the offense and he’s the guy that didn’t succeed at Norte Dame,” Feldman told the Victor and Matt Show on 110SportsPodcast.com.

“Would Weis be able to go 100 MPH like college coaches have to this days, especially if you are taking over a miserable program as Kansas football that was 2-10? You have to be really hands on,” Feldman added.

Remember, it was a little surprising that Weis was named the OC at Florida, but nonetheless, this past year was disappointing. Weis has the make of an NFL coach. One who will burn the midnight oil, diagramming plays to beat his next opponent. Not spending endless hours recruiting teenagers and making sure they attend class.

Looking at his track record in the college game, the excitement in Lawrence might not be too high. Sure the name may sell a few tickets, but at the end of the day wins and bowl appearances are what matters. “I think it’s a very questionable hire,” Feldman stated. “To put a bow on that, if you look at what Mark Mangino did, I would be surprised if Charlie Weis leaves with a better record or winning percentage than Mangino who was barely above .500.”

Only time will tell if Weis has any better luck this go around, but if history does repeat himself, Jayhawk fans should probably care more about the basketball team and don’t get their hopes too high about the football program.
