Vic’s Picks: Penn State, Joe Paterno, Oregon-Stanford

Saturday, November 12th, 2011
  • By now, all the talk surrounding Penn State and the firing of Joe Paterno has been exhausting, but the end might not be in sight. First off, let’s remember the ones that were taken advantage of by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are the real victims. It’s not Joe Pa who was relieved of his duties over the phone instead of in person. The Penn State trustees who made the decision to remove Paterno immediately did the correct thing. If blame is going to be put on Paterno, assistant coach Mike McQueary deserves the same, if not more. McQueary witnessed Sandusky in the shower and only spoke to his father and Paterno. Morally, both Paterno and McQueary should be ashamed of themselves for not doing more. An interesting question with Paterno is after the biggest scandal in recent memory under his watch, what will his legacy be? Will he be remembered for 409 wins, the most of any coach in Division I history? Or as the guy who turned his back and didn’t do more to prevent this disturbing act? The reality is simple. It’s in the eye of the beholder. Some may just look at all the good things, while others will only take the negative. However, few, may take a little of both, which is where it should be. In a sense, Joe Pa was bigger than life in the state of Pennsylvania and yet because of his stature, he might have dug his very own grave by keeping quite.
