Kansas adding Charlie Weis sits atop most puzzling college football hires

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Bruce Feldman, senior college football columnist for CBSSports.com, just shrugged his shoulders.

That was his reaction when he learned that Kansas named Charlie Weis its head football coach.

The hiring was a little surprising because Weis had just returned to the college game a year after basically being forced out as offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. It wasn’t that long ago when Weis was considered one of the hottest coaching prospects. “Now you’re taking a guy who had a pretty unspectacular stint at Florida where he did basically nothing with the offense and he’s the guy that didn’t succeed at Norte Dame,” Feldman told the Victor and Matt Show on 110SportsPodcast.com.

“Would Weis be able to go 100 MPH like college coaches have to this days, especially if you are taking over a miserable program as Kansas football that was 2-10? You have to be really hands on,” Feldman added.

Remember, it was a little surprising that Weis was named the OC at Florida, but nonetheless, this past year was disappointing. Weis has the make of an NFL coach. One who will burn the midnight oil, diagramming plays to beat his next opponent. Not spending endless hours recruiting teenagers and making sure they attend class.

Looking at his track record in the college game, the excitement in Lawrence might not be too high. Sure the name may sell a few tickets, but at the end of the day wins and bowl appearances are what matters. “I think it’s a very questionable hire,” Feldman stated. “To put a bow on that, if you look at what Mark Mangino did, I would be surprised if Charlie Weis leaves with a better record or winning percentage than Mangino who was barely above .500.”

Only time will tell if Weis has any better luck this go around, but if history does repeat himself, Jayhawk fans should probably care more about the basketball team and don’t get their hopes too high about the football program.

Vic’s Picks: Carson Palmer, NBA, Mike Leach

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011
  • This past Tuesday, quarterback Carson Palmer finally got his wish: he was traded from the Cincinnati Bengals to the Oakland Raiders. Palmer wanted out of Cincinnati so bad that he was willing to sit out the entire season without pay to prove his point. As an organization, the Bengals look to be sitting pretty. Their two rookies: quarterback Andy Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green have been solid picks, improving every week. In exchange for the former Heisman trophy winner they got a reported first and second round pick from Oakland. Finally, and probably most importantly, they got rid of a player who didn’t want to be there and basically walked out on all his teammates. Mike Brown, the owner of the Bengals, can be thick-headed as he is somewhat known as a difficult person to get along with. The fact he did not cave into Palmer’s demands shows that it’s his team and only he will decide what changes need to be made. Brown looks like he got the better end of the deal anyway. He got rid of an aging quarterback and in the process got parts that help build for the future.
  • It’s anyone’s guess on how many games will be played during the NBA season. One day the owners and players seem to be making progress and then the next day they are further away then they were before. One thing is for sure though; there will be plenty of college basketball regardless of whether or not the NBA ends the lockout. After last season, with the possibility of a lockout on the horizon many college players decided to return to school, knowing they would be playing basketball this winter. In that sense, the competition of the college game should be as high as its been. Players like North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes and John Hanson, Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger and Kentucky’s Terrance Jones all decided to return, making the elite in college basketball that much more competitive. Die hard basketball fans are excited and can’t wait for games to start. However, sports fans in general will probably start showing interest in college basketball like they always do, after the conclusion of the Super Bowl.
