Vic’s Picks: Duke basketball, Coach K, USC-Oregon

Saturday, November 19th, 2011
  • With a 74-69 victory over Michigan State on Tuesday, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski became the all-time wins leader for a coach in Division I men’s college basketball history passing his mentor Bob Knight with 903 victories. While the hatred for Coach K and all current and former Blue Devils players runs high, this remarkable feat is quite the accomplishment and deserves to be recognized. The significance of this record shows the success Coach K has sustained over a long period of time. Over the years as the style of play has changed in the college game, Coach K has adapted, but in the process has stayed true to his principles and preached loyalty. The debate of whether this now makes Coach K the greatest coach is all based upon opinion. There’s no question that he is considered one of the top coaches in history, but some will argue that John Wooden winning 10 national titles at UCLA makes the Wizard of Westwood the best. For now, let’s appreciate the accomplishment. It’s not very often a record of this magnitude is achieved. Something that can’t be ignored is the fact Coach K won the correct way and doesn’t have any major violations hanging over his head. When players play for Duke they are expected to give their best effort and in return they were rewarded of being a part of history. Watching the game against the Spartans and seeing the ESPN cameras scanning the crowd and seeing so many former Blue Devils was impressive to say the least. For Coach K, he had to be excited not only to get the record, but to do so with so many of his former players there to witness it. Congratulations again Coach K!

Vic’s Picks: Penn State, Joe Paterno, Oregon-Stanford

Saturday, November 12th, 2011
  • By now, all the talk surrounding Penn State and the firing of Joe Paterno has been exhausting, but the end might not be in sight. First off, let’s remember the ones that were taken advantage of by former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky are the real victims. It’s not Joe Pa who was relieved of his duties over the phone instead of in person. The Penn State trustees who made the decision to remove Paterno immediately did the correct thing. If blame is going to be put on Paterno, assistant coach Mike McQueary deserves the same, if not more. McQueary witnessed Sandusky in the shower and only spoke to his father and Paterno. Morally, both Paterno and McQueary should be ashamed of themselves for not doing more. An interesting question with Paterno is after the biggest scandal in recent memory under his watch, what will his legacy be? Will he be remembered for 409 wins, the most of any coach in Division I history? Or as the guy who turned his back and didn’t do more to prevent this disturbing act? The reality is simple. It’s in the eye of the beholder. Some may just look at all the good things, while others will only take the negative. However, few, may take a little of both, which is where it should be. In a sense, Joe Pa was bigger than life in the state of Pennsylvania and yet because of his stature, he might have dug his very own grave by keeping quite.

College Football Preview: Oregon Ducks at Arizona Wildcats

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

For Arizona football, things may get worse before they get better. Trying to snap its seven game losing streak against teams in the BCS, the Wildcats host No. 10 Oregon tonight at Arizona Stadium. However, don’t expect the Cats to win their second game of the 2011 season unless the defense can limit Oregon’s high-powered offense and the offense can match score for score. It’s extremely important that the Wildcats score touchdowns and not settle for trying to make field goals. As seen as last year and last week against Stanford, Arizona’s special teams are not very good, missing two field goals that would have cut into the Cardinal’s lead and lining up off sides on a fourth down on a punt which eventually lead to a touchdown. The Ducks are going to score points. They are just too good and fast not to. The important key is not to give them a ton of opportunities. They run the ball better than any team in the Pac-12 and as long as Chip Kelly remains head coach that trend doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Arizona needs to start fast and maintain a consistent pace throughout the whole game. If the Wildcats go cold in consecutive possessions any time this evening they may very well find themselves behind by multiple touchdowns.

How bad does Mike Stoops need this victory? In a sense, he needs it to quiet the hot seat rumors that have been flying around the desert the past couple weeks. It’s important to remember that Arizona’s schedule of Oklahoma State, Stanford, Oregon and USC in consecutive games is arguably the most challenging four-game stretch any team has to play this year. Outside of Oklahoma, Alabama and LSU, there isn’t another team in the country that would come out of this four game stretch perfect. Let’s see how the team does the rest of the season against the likes of Oregon State, UCLA, Washington and Utah. Expect Arizona to keep it close, but eventually Oregon will pull away just because they have so much talent.
