When you think about the biggest flops in NFL history, names like JaMarcus Russell, Tim Couch and Ryan Leaf usually spring off the tongue faster than others. All three are the butt of many jokes, yet one of the names mentioned above could one day have a unique position with a team that could prove to be a valuable asset. It may sound crazy because all three careers could be considered nothing short of disastrous.
Sometimes when the police or the government want to catch a criminal to figure out how the crime is being committed they will seek advice from a fellow criminal. Similarly, with his well documented issues on and off the field, Leaf could be the guy who may help a team evaluate potential athletes coming out of college and maybe spot signs of a player that should be passed on. There’s no guarantee this plan is full proof, but experiencing many difficulties, Leaf could be worth the risk.
Leaf, who is promoting his new book 596 Switch, opened up with the Victor and Matt Show on 110SportsPodcast.com and entertained the idea of this potential opportunity, “I would relish the opportunity. I think some people are surprised, but I don’t want anyone to feel the way I did. I want them to be successful out there. When it comes down to it I’m a fan first.”
The signs could be tough to see, but again, having someone that has already gone through may help. Leaf also commented on what could draw a red flag, “It’s tough to say. It really depends where a player goes. I would probably say in the humility side of things. How humble that person is? Can he take things not so seriously and laugh about himself? If there truly is a chip on your shoulder about being criticized, that’s not going to last very long in the NFL, that’s for sure.”
The person Leaf is today is clearly not the person he was in his playing days. Imagine if someone had spotted the struggles of a young player before everything built up and exploded like a massive volcano. Leaf could be that guy. He could give back to the game he loved with his whole heart. The reason, if given the chance, Leaf will not fail this go around is because he’s simply been humbled. He’s recognized his mistakes and would like to prevent others from following his path.
