Vic’s Picks: Miami Hurricanes football, Tiger Woods

Saturday, August 27th, 2011
  • Things seem to just be getting worse for the Miami Hurricanes football program. Last week, Yahoo! Sports reported that booster Nevin Shapiro gave illegal benefits to 72 players, some of which are on the current roster. On Thursday night, a number of players, including starting quarterback Jacory Harris, were ruled ineligible until reinstated by the NCAA. It’s important to note that being ruled ineligible doesn’t mean that player would miss any of the season. Miami has already filled out the paperwork to reinstate the players involved. Until they are ruled eligible, they will still be allowed to practice. The problem that may eventually arise is that where there is smoke there is usually fire. Meaning that, if Harris and his current teammates are being investigated after being named one of the 72 players by Shapiro it could mean the forfeit of games that they play this season. Head coach Al Golden is in a difficult situation because his job is to win football games, and that’s a tough slate if some of the top players he was counting on won’t be able to play. Golden would be wise to prepare that Harris and the others ruled eligible won’t be available all season and if he does get them back it’s an added bonus.
  • Fred Couples has announced that Tiger Woods will be one of the 12-member Presidents Cup team, leaving out any suspense that Woods would be left off. Ten players automatically qualify for the team based on points accumulated over the past two years. As team captain, Couples gets two picks. While Woods has struggled most of the year, he still is one of the best golfers in the world. Couples not waiting until the last minute are good in two parts. First, the pressure of answering all the questions from the media about whether or not he is picking Woods is now off his shoulder. Second, now that Woods knows he made the team, he can get healthy and work out the kinks in his game and be ready for the tournament on Nov. 14-20. If Woods can end the year playing well, he would be able to use this as a springboard for next year and get back on track chasing No. 18.
