SB 1070 enjoined by federal judge

Federal Judge Susan Bolton granted an injunction against key sections of SB 1070 today, hours before the controversial new law was to take effect. The judge’s decision gave the federal government and opponents  a major legal victory. Parts of the new law will still take effect Thursday. However, the major provisions that drew the opposition of immigrant rights groups, the ACLU and the Justice Department will not go into effect.

Killer and freaky lightning strikes

With 17 deaths by lightning from 1990 to 2003, Arizona ranked 15th on the list of states with fatal lightning strikes. Some of the freakier strikes across the nation include a man struck through his motorcycle helmet, a woman found dead with her jeans zipper melted and a girl who suffered mouth burns when lightning struck nearby and sent shocks through her braces. Grijalva rescinds his call for convention boycott

U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Tucson Democrat whom hoteliers say started the tourism blacklisting of the state with his calls for a convention boycott to protest the new immigration law, today rescinded his call for a boycott. Grijalva said the federal judge’s preliminary injunction preventing several sections of Arizona’s new immigration law from going into effect Thursday is a good time to “pause and see what the next step is.”

New Prairie Dogs at Desert Museum

Three old bachelor prairie dogs were joined by 24 new, younger animals from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas. The new animals (six males, 15 females and three of indeterminate sex) are out of quarantine, and now on display at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. They are already renovating the network of tunnels in the exhibit.
