JFK on Religion in Government

by on Jan. 05, 2012, under Atheism, Bigotry, Catholic, Christian, GLBT, santorum

I just saw this again.

Imagine a country where preachers don’t tell people how to vote,
we don’t judge our leaders by their religion, we don’t give tax money
to church schools or institutions.

It is sad how far our country has fallen.

The failure of government – and the success of the cultural warriors of the right – is on the shoulders of the citizens. (My opinion)

Politicians respond to pressure – which does not come from  the citizens. We know its source. The culture warriors have made gains because they could, because it was not terribly difficult.

In a healthy democracy, citizens are and stay engaged. This isnt a healthy democracy. It has a fatal flaw – the american citizen.

So many Americans ignore the fact that America is, and always has been, a nation of bigots. That JFK had to spell out his “Separation of Church & State” ideals was, for me at the time, appalling. (Yes, I was around way back then to actually see his speech in Houston live.)
Today, as in yesteryear, religion is a central tenant of American politics. There is a simple explanation. You and millions of other Americans who understand the “Establishment Clause” of our Constitution and the Jeffersonian Principle of Separation of Church & State have not done nearly enough to counter the influence of the Christian wackos. You’ve been a part of the problem, not the solution. Get off your butts and go fight the bigots.
To paraphrase Dick Cavett, “It’s a rare individual who wants to hear what he doesn’t want to hear.” DO SOMETHING.

Since you obviously know what I have done, perhaps you could enlighten me as to what I have failed to do ?
