In Praise of Repub Teaching methodsby Tip O'Neill on Jan. 22, 2012, under Arizona, Bigotry, Huppenthall, Nativism, Republican, santorum
Anyone who reads TC.com is by now familiar with the Repub effort to destroy ethnic studies in the state, and specifically in TUSD.
DA Morales has covered it extensively.
As with most Repub social policy, it has been a total failure.
“I don’t like it so let’s ban it” usually backfires as social policy and this one has big time.
The problem that Repubs were attempting to solve was that some students were being taught their ethnic history and culture – which is basically ignored in the usual eurocentric curriculum.
A lot of that history is a story of oppression, persecution and even in some cases genocide.
Learning this might tend to cause “resentment”.
We can’t have that.
To make matters even worse, there seemed to be a widespread opinion that “Republicans hate Latinos”.
We definitely can’t have that.
So what is the best way to show that Repubs don’t hate Latinos ?
Why, to attack Latinos, of course.
I kid you not – that is the way these people’s minds work
So, they may have shut down a fairly small high school program and confiscated a few books, but you can be certain that many more students who had never heard of those books will now read them, and many more students, and citizens, who have been watching the events at TUSD have formed opinions about Republicans and their respect for Latino culture.
Classroom lectures aren’t the only way that students learn, and TUSD students have received a valuable lesson that they are unlikely to forget for many years.
They will be tested on it at the polls.
Thank you, Repubs.
