This is an old idea, but one I think is very appropriate on lots of levels - find a puppy of the desired breed from a reputable breeder that will have puppies available in January. Once you have a deposit on a pup, everyone I know that breeds dogs would be happy to send a picture of two of the litter and/or Mom or Dad Dog so the gift recipient can have a picture of what's to come - it's also a great time to get puppy support gifts like a crate, a bed, some bowls (check with the breeder as to brand of food they will want puppy on, get a bag of puppy food), a little leash and collar, book or other info on breed characteristics and care ... there are a million reasons a puppy is a great gift and a million reasons the gift should NOT arrive during the disruptive holiday celebration days !!

I don't know if you can pre-adopt an animal from any of the shelters or rescues, but with a little imagination, I'm sure a package of some sort could be made up to embrace getting a dog or puppy from rescue or a shelter once life settles from the holidays.

Its really hard on a puppy to come into a home while the children are on Christmas break from school ... the kids are there ever day for the puppy just long enough for it to think that's how life is and then the kids go back to school and puppy is confused and lonesome. From many years experience as a household obedience trainer, I believe that's a good recipe for all kinds of problems. It's very best to integrate the new family member when life is as close to "routine" as possible !

No matter what her intent, it was INAPPROPRIATE for a public official to respond in this matter. A balled up fist is not a tap on the shoulder. Someone needs to teach her to use her words; ie she could have responded with humor, deflection, truth or if she felt she could not or didn't want to answer, could have deferred to an aid. Obviously, I am no fan of Jan Brewer. Even though the journalist may have have tried to push her buttons because Ms. Brewer's previous answer about global warming was stupid, she should not have responded with her fist.

I thought she OK by wagging her finger in the face if our glorious President. This guy wont protect the border like he is supposed to. He just wants more peons here so he can make them all citizens, so they can vote for his party. Someone has to tell him.

That's completely different; there's a place for public art. What comes after workshops such as this is providing places for people to express themselves. That's not the same as kids or anyone else vandalizing somebody's property. Society works best, I think, when we look at ways to address social problems in positive ways. It creates good conversation. It frees up more people to feel they have a place. It generates good vibes. It helps young people learn to think critically.

Hi Alfie!

Here is something I bet you don't know about "Tagging," the Officially Sanctioned and Taxpayer Supported sport of Tucson Arizona.

Several years ago, I sat in a Tucson City Council meeting and watched Council Person Regina Romero proudly announce she had just spent $24,000.00 in discretionary funds to hire a French Grafitti Professor, fly him over from Paris, to teach the youth in her district the fine art of using the Spray Paint Can to decorate and otherwise to "express" themselves.

"It instills ethnic pride and gives them something to do after school," Romero declared, and the Mayor and other councilpersons cheered.

Got that? When I complained about it people referred to me as a "racist!"

Welcome to hypocracy and "realpolitik" in the Old Pueblo!!
