Dear Representatives,
Our organization, Somos Republicans (somos is Spanish for “we are”), is strongly opposed to state and local immigration enforcement. We’ve seen what has happened here in Arizona, where there are too many anti-immigrant laws that are focused on over-criminalization, and we have watched SB 1070 destroy our economy, and the continued foreclosures on Arizona homes can easily be attributed to the mass exodus we have all witnessed. Such laws like SB 1070, and those that attack our 14th amendment of the Constitution are flagrantly unconstitutional, that costs millions of dollars to defend, almost always unsuccessfully. Fremont’s local ordinance is a copy of the Hazelton, PA ordinance. After losing litigation over the constitutionality of the Hazelton ordinance, Hazelton was ordered to pay the attorney fees for the plaintiffs, to the tune of $5 million, and Hazelton’s insurer will not cover this expense either. The net result is that a small town is out millions of dollars, didn’t accomplish anything except damage its reputation with Hispanics and drive many Hispanic citizens and legal immigrants away. Now Arizonans are stuck with a legal bill in defense of $1 million dollars and counting.
It’s also worth noting that Hispanics have twice the national rate of business start-ups. Less than one in six Hispanics are unlawfully present, and the vast majority of those unlawfully present are otherwise law abiding, have much lower incarceration rates than citizens, etc. It clearly makes common sense to reform our system to provide adequate numbers of visas to meet our needs, rather than take drastic enforcement measures that are costly, likely unconstitutional, and hurt law abiding Hispanic citizens and legal immigrants.
Somos Republicans is promoting the “Compact With America”, a national program inspired after the Utah Compact, which successfully built a broad based coalition of community, religious, and business leaders in Utah to oppose similar legislation in Utah. The Compact With America is a non-partisan initiative that we believe will likewise build strong coalitions in other states.
Somos Republicans is a grass-roots Hispanic Republican organization based in Arizona, and expanding rapidly nationwide, growing from one member in Arizona in early 2009, to over 6,000 members nationwide. Because of our strong vocal opposition against SB1070 type of laws and 14th Amendment changes to our Constitution, and our support for the DREAM Act, Hispanics across the nation have expressed their desire to be part of our national team.
We have checked legislative records and we have not seen to date any indication that a resolution/bill has been introduced that would model the Utah Compact. If an ARIZONA COMPACT resolution has been introduced, please point us to that information. If not, we hope you all will consider supporting it. Our sources have told us that Mr. Chabin might be interested in supporting an ARIZONA COMPACT, and we hope this is the case. Please find the attached legislative language helpful to you so that we can facilitate this resolution before the deadline.
Please feel free to share this e-mail widely.
Warmest regards,
