“I don’t think it’s a good idea, it’s ludicrous,” says Adam Bustos, president of Somos Republicans, a burgeoning Hispanic Republican group in Arizona.“Big universities have police officers, but a lot of junior colleges, some have security, not armed police officers. You pass this bill and students will be carrying weapons – not security.”
Bustos counts 37 years of law enforcement background where he served from everything as a patrol officer to detective, swat team and narcotics.
Others say the issue of on-campus safety is overblown and misunderstood.
<snip>“I hope the governor doesn’t pass it,” Bustos says. “I am a Republican, obviously I have different views. If these Republican senators want to pass this bill…I’m sorry they think that way. They’re going the wrong way and taking the wrong path.”
The back and forth on the proposed legislation will continue with the conversation framed, in part, by Sunday’s anniversary of the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, which saw the congresswoman shot and six others killed in Tucson, Ariz.
