Phoenix, AZ —  As the Florida primaries come to a close, it is time for the Republican Presidential Candidates to know the real pulse of the Latino community in the Midwestern and Southwestern parts of the United States. SOMOS REPUBLICANS became the largest Hispanic Republican group in the nation because we were the only Hispanic GOP grassroots organization in the country to stand tall against Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law when all other Latino GOP groups sided with the draconian law.  We believe Senator Marco Rubio might help with Florida, but he will damage the Party throughout the rest of the country since he does not hold mainstream Latino political views.  Unfortunately, Rubio has denied support to our children via the DREAM Act multiple times, and he has gone so far as to embrace Arizona’s draconian anti-immigrant law at a time when Latinos needed him the most.  Rubio chose to kick Latinos while they were down during one of the most difficult Latin eras of our time.
In order for the Republican Party to win over more Latinos in states such as Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and California, they must choose a Vice Presidential candidate who has never wavered on the immigration issue.  Former Lt. governor Abel Maldonado can help the Gingrich campaign win over Western key swing states with regard to Latinos.  Maldonado is a Republican Mexican-American politician who has a reasonable approach to the immigration issue for the Republican Party.  Unfortunately, Cuban-Republicans in Florida who endorsed Mitt Romney are out of touch with the majority of Latinos across the country since they benefit from Cuban Amnesty under the Cuban Adjustment Act, and they do not need legal immigration reform.

Gingrich should pick a stalwart as he mobilizes in the Midwest and the Southwest. If Gingrich communicates to business owners, and the construction, restaurant, hotel, and agricultural industries that benefit from competitive immigrant labor, that he supports comprehensive, humane immigration reform, and chooses a credible advocate such as Abel Maldonado as a partner in this endeavor,  he will receive significant support.  It is time to heal for a stronger voice on immigration reform via Gingrich and Maldonado.
