Largest Latino Republican Group in the Nation Endorses Newt Gingrich

For Immediate Release:  January 16, 2012

info@somosrepublicans.com

Phoenix, AZ –  The largest Hispanic Republican group in the Country is endorsing Newt Gingrich as the 2012 Republican Nominee. We believe Newt Gingrich knows the importance of the Latino community.  50 million Latinos comprise 16% of our country’s population today. Half of our country’s population growth in the next 20 years will be generated by the growth in the Latino population. Latinos have become a key driver of our nation’s future. While the other candidates seem oblivious to this fact, Newt Gingrich has been working hard for many years to include American Hispanics in the overall conversation for a better America.

We are also sad to see Jon Huntsman withdraw from the Republican primary election race because we believe he took a humanitarian approach in supporting children via the Federal DREAM Act.  We are disappointed in learning that Huntsman will support Mitt Romney which is unfortunate because Romney takes an non-humanitarian approach to the DREAM Act and legal immigration reform.  Recently 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney stated he will veto the DREAM Act, therefore, SOMOS REPUBLICANS will veto Romney at the polls.

Mitt Romney can’t blast Rick Perry on immigration when RomneyCare gave undocumented immigrants medical

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Why is Mitt Romney attacking Rick Perry for Perry’s immigration stance and the DREAM Act when RomneyCare (no different than ObamaCare) provided medical aid to undocumented immigrants?

Romney has no room to talk!

We all know that Romney is taking a populist approach in demonizing the undocumented immigrants. He thinks that if he does what the Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona does, then he will win. Not so, because we will be right here every step of the way reminding everyone how Romney supported RomneyCare, gave his oath to protect a woman’s right to choose and etc.

From the LA Times:

Medical help for illegal immigrants could haunt Mitt Romney

On the Republican campaign trail, he derides any such public aid. But the healthcare law he signed as Massachusetts governor allows it.

Marco Rubio, Will you show “them” your papers, please?

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

From the NATIONAL TEQUILA PARTY MOVEMENT (a Hispanic female-led political national movement that counters the Tea Party and rocks the Latino Vote).

Rubio, Will you show them your papers, please?

Early this year in June, 2011, I attended an immigration summit in Washington D.C., sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, called “Immigration Works and Conservatives for Immigration Reform.” One of the reasons I wanted to attend was to try to strengthen Latino and Jewish relationships. Together, immigration advocates made several Senate and Congressional visits.

About a dozen of us visited Senator Marco Rubio’s office where we met with one of his staffers. Senator Rubio’s aide told a group of Florida constituents who had just attended the immigration conference that the Senator was against the Dream Act because it was a form of “amnesty.” The aide stressed to the group that Senator Rubio’s family came to the United States via legal mechanisms, and the Senator believed that others should follow the law.

Is that so?

Recent articles have pointed out that Senator Rubio’s parents first entered the United States in l956, prior to the Cuban Revolution of 1959. His mother returned to Cuba in l961, weeks before the Bay of Pigs invasion, but only for a couple of weeks and she decided to return to the USA in exile. Given Senator Rubio’s intransigent position on immigration reform, his own family’s immigration history should be examined under a microscope.

What was the legal status of his parents and older siblings who were born in Cuba, in the United States between l956 and 1966? Were they visa overstays? If not, what was their legal status, and where is the proof of such legal status? It is important to note that less than half of our country’s present undocumented population of about 10 million entered the country via the United States’ border with Mexico – the rest entered with a visa and overstayed. Visa overstays are as undocumented as those that cross the border.

Senator Rubio’s parents had a daughter born in the United States between the period of l956 and l966, a time period where their legal status is unclear. Senator Rubio’s sister would not be allowed to be a United States citizen pursuant to legislation that some in his Tea Party are introducing – which would change the 14th Amendment to not grant citizenship to children born in the United States to one or two undocumented parents.

The generous “Cuban Adjustment Act” of November 2, 1966, seems to have given Senator Rubio’s family a shot at the American dream. It seems that Senator Rubio’s parents after 10 years of a questionable immigration status – or as visa overstays – were able to become legal, with what many call, “the Cuban Amnesty.” To this day, any Cuban that is inspected or paroled into the United States can become a Legal Permanent Resident a year after they first enter. This law also grants this status to a Cuban national that crosses the United States’ Mexican border illegally. Senator Rubio’s brother, Mario, became a United States citizen in 1971. Legal Permanent Residents can apply to become naturalized United States citizens five years after they are allowed to become Legal Permanent Residents. It is interesting to note that Senator Rubio’s brother became a naturalized United States citizen in 1971, five years after the Cuban Adjustment Act.

Carlos Roa, one of the four courageous “Dream Walkers” who on January 1, 2011, walked 1,500 miles from Miami, Florida to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of the Dream Act, has parallels to Senator Rubio’s immigration story. Carlos was brought to the United States from Venezuela by his parents with a visa when he was two years of age. His parents perhaps decided to remain in the United States, in “exile” as a result of President Chavez’ close links to Castro’s Cuba and the changed political landscape in Venezuela. Unlike Senator Rubio’s brother, Mario, Congress has not enacted the “Venezuelan Adjustment Act.” There are about 2 million children brought to this country by their parents, many escaping repressive governments, others escaping abject poverty, while their parents fill our nation’s labor needs in many industries. The rule of law is important, and we must strive to fix our broken immigration system to promote legal migration and give us an immigration system that makes us globally competitive for the 21st century.

We hope that Senator Rubio joins Republican Representative Ileana Ros Lehiten to work across the aisle with Senator Bob Menendez and give our nation sensible immigration reform that is needed to help our economy as well. Our current enforcement approach to a broken system is fiscally irresponsible. If Senator Rubio fails to work for the good of our nation and give back to others what this nation did for his family, we will continue to demand from his parents and siblings born in Cuba from 1956 to 1966, their “papers, please.”

It was unfortunate for me to learn about Rubio defending Arizona’s “papers, please” law, but now birthers and nativists are asking his family to show their papers. What it amounts to is that at the end of the day Rubio is just like the rest of us.

Breaking: Mexicans helped foil the terrorist plot against Washington D.C.

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

You always hear the bad stuff from the likes of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and State Sen. Russell Pearce, but let’s go ahead and shout from the mountain tops that Mexicans helped foil the Washington D.C. plot that was planned to harm our leaders in Washington D.C.

Please send good thoughts, karma or prayers towards President Obama and the safety of our government leaders.

Officials said that he had flown from Iran to Mexico City, via Frankfurt, but had been refused entry to Mexico and had been put on a plane to New York.    Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2047939/US-foils-Iran-terror-plot-kill-Saudi-ambassador-Washington-D-C.html#ixzz1aVKJL2Yk

From the Blaze below:

The case has been called “Operation Red Coalition” and traces back to an Iranian-American from Corupus Christi, Texas, who contacted a DEA informat in May, for help from a Mexican drug cartel to assassinate the Saudi ambassador. The Iranian-American thought he was dealing with a member of the Zetas Mexican drug organization, according to agents. The assassination was allegedly “directed by elements of the Iranian Government” according to CNN.

Overton Window! Thoughts and Feedback from a Future Emerging Leader….

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

Passion.  That’s who we are.

No need to harness it any more, because we can combine it with intellect as it adds a vibrant and refreshing spirit in a broken atmosphere.  Our nation seems to be in a FUNK. Being optimistic is crucial when we are surrounded by bad news day in and day out.  We have our good days and we have our bad days, and it is absolutely imperative to remember the good moods as we look ahead and will most assuredly experience bad days ahead.

I want to share this spirited note below because it gives me hope.  Nobody is alone even though we all feel like it at times.  Everyone has their own part to play, and no matter how small or great it is — it’s all part of the plan.

From a Future Latino Leader:

Overton Window!!!

I read this and the more I discuss the DREAM ACT with people the more I believe in this issue. If I were to debate this with another individual my focus/theme would be that this is the most realistic plan that I know if which covers a win/win for both parties. I think the focus is to make people become more aware of what this truly does for America and the people who want to become citizens of this country. We need people to get out of the old way of thinking and realize that we are a vulnerable country at this time. We have to focus on building this country and getting us back to where we need to be. If I look at this correctly not only does the DREAM ACT address an sensible and realistic solution to some of the immigration issues that people are talking about. Then the fact that not only does it stabilize our countries economy, but it would be a boost for our country as well. Do we forget that we will soon have a baby boomers exit out of the work force and how will we replace those empty spots.

You give people the opportunity to do something the “right” way and if they are not able to then unfortunately there are consequences to not adhering to the DREAM ACT. Why or maybe I am missing, but are we not really pitching the DREAM ACT much more than attempting to obtain citizenship? Why are we not hitting up debates and asking what other solutions our friends have in order to deal with and focus on the issues that so many discuss, but then don’t have a solution to place on the table. WE have to get people to agree that the DREAM ACT is a solution and this is a start, but we can’t put out a fire without the necessities. I am sitting here at mijo’s football practice and I am all over so sorry if this does not make sense, but I hope it does.

I get so emotional over this and I tend to observe as opposed to speaking out. I have told **** that I am a communicator and what I love most is that I see both sides and in my job I am always subjected to confrontation! My philosophy is truly diplomatic so to speak. I love being able to come to a solution with people and this has always been me.

I don’t have to win every battle, but in the end outcome I win the war!!!

Damn…I swear I got that off a movie!!!

I told **** that I feel my calling at this time is to get out and talk to the people and my start is going to be the colleges. It’s hard to do some of these things right now and feel that we need to start getting some money coming into the party so we can reach out and I am always open to suggestions. I am here and I will be here for a long time and as long as you need something I will be more than happy to help in any way!!!

I look forward to the future and I see good things happening. We are all fortunate to have a leader like yourself who is truly devoted to seeing things change!!!

National Tequila Party Denied Freedom of Speech at Rally; ACLU Takes Complaint

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

The National Tequila Party Movement was launched in Arizona a/k/a immigration ground zero.

At their 2nd rally, Tequila Party leaders were told not to discuss the immigration issue in Kansas on property that is owned by the City of Wichita.  How could this be allowed to take place when every American holds freedom of speech, religion, et. al. sacred to their hearts?  The ACLU will be investigating how and why this was allowed to happen on city owned/tax payer funded property.

Wichita, KS –The National Tequila Party Movement was happy with the level of support we received at our Wichita, Kansas Tequila Party rally on July 29th, 2011, despite the heat wave and rain.   People came and went as they visited our voter registration booth to learn more about our efforts.  That said, we were surprised to find out the day before our Tequila Party Rally that we could not discuss the one thing hurting the Latino community the most – the immigration issue. It was our understanding that Nomar Plaza was built to bring about cultural awareness, neighborhood revitalization and economic development.  We were disappointed in not being able to talk about the issue that is hurting and affecting our culture.

We believed it was especially important to discuss the economic contributions immigrants have made to our society, and how we must debunk the lies that immigrants are a drain to society.  According to estimates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are 3.1 related jobs off the farm for every job on the farm that an “undocumented immigrant” works. Eliminating the “immigrant” on-farm jobs would put at risk many more jobs paying middle-class wages and employing native-born American workers.

The Nomar Plaza is owned by the City of Wichita, and despite paying our vendor fee to the Nomar manager, we were told we could not discuss the immigration issue as well as the DREAM Act. Due to the unfortunate incidents that occurred last Friday we filed a complaint with the Kansas/Missouri ACLU as a result of our restriction to freedom of speech. The ACLU stated they will take our complaint and look into why our freedom of speech was restricted.

We would like to especially thank the Kansas City DREAM Act Activists, Representative Ponka-we Victors and Representative Melody McCray-Miller for attending our rally as it shows their support for our national campaign for a strong Latino Get Out the Vote (GOTV).   We invited both the Republican and Democratic Party of Kansas; however, the Republican Party did not return our emails.  The Sedgwick County Democratic Party volunteered their support for our Latin GOTV and we are thankful for their support.

Marco Rubio is a hypocrite on wanting no new taxes but new taxpayers

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Tequila Party to Tea Partier Senator Marco Rubio: “We have your new taxpayers but you don’t want them!”

Phoenix, AZ –Recently Tea Partier and Junior Senator Marco Rubio stated that we don’t need new taxes but new taxpayers. However, when the opportunity presented itself for new taxpayers to come into the fold via the DREAM Act, Senator Marco Rubio quashed it. We have the new taxpayers, but he doesn’t want them. He stated multiple times he was against the DREAM Act and chooses to punish children for the sins of their father.

Marco Rubio’s tax complaints come with no reasonable and sound solutions to offer in return. If he wants new taxpayers but no new taxes, then he ought to support the DREAM Act that will in essence create new taxpayers into our system. According to the CATO Institute, introducing a legal immigration reform plan would contribute billions towards tax revenues and/or boost incomes across the U.S.

Tea Partiers advocated the complete shutting down of our government, and with Rubio’s policies, he is taking us on that same destructive path again. If we cannot come to a bipartisan solution via legal immigration reform to acquire new taxpayers, then Tea Partiers will have no choice but to increase taxes or cut entitlement programs like social security. Which will they choose?

Rep. Lamar Smith attacks Ruben Navarrette on immigration views

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Rep Lamar Smith is attacking one of the most successful Mexican-American columnists that has ever existed — Ruben Navarrette. You can read the full article here.   What is up Lamar’s sleeve?  E-verify is.  He claims it is voluntary but every single Senate office I visited last month in Washington D.C.  told me that Lamar wants to introduce a national e-verification program in August.  He’s setting out the pillows because Lamar Smith thinks e-verify will happen without protest.

The State of Florida rejected their state version of e-verify and no thanks to Lamar Smith, we are going to lose the State of Florida in 2012 because in essence he is not listening to the business community.  The business community does not want to embrace more government bureaucracy via e-verify without a reasonable immigration solution. Businesses depend on competitive labor, and Lamar wants to increase the wage rate.

Why is Lamar Smith attacking Ruben but ignoring the backbone of our economic engine?  Did he forget small businesses and farmers are the backbone of our country?

More importantly, the DREAM Act activists have already declared that they will not trade e-verify programs in exchange for passage of the DREAM Act.  You can read their response here. They already know Lamar Smith wants them to forget about their mother and father for a cheap trade.  Lamar Smith is NOT in support of maintaining the family unit and he wants to give Latinos the scraps in exchange for harsh enforcement policies by dangling the DREAM Act carrot in front of our DREAMers noses.  Pretty revolting if you ask me.

It looks like we are headed back to the days of Sensenbrenner where massive protests were sparked with enforcement only policies.  When massive protests are sparked again WE ARE GOING TO BLAME LAMAR SMITH.

Lionel Sosa (former Ronald Reagan Hispanic advisor): Lamar Smith, You are wrong on immigration.

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

From one Republican to Another:

Lamar Smith, you are wrong on immigration.

And wrong on the Dream Act.

Lamar, where did you go wrong? You were such a sensitive fellow when we worked together 30 years ago.

You’ve always been an anti-immigration advocate but as you gain power in congress, you seem to be getting crankier and more self-righteous, not (as you say) more American. Now, you add insult to injury by opposing the Dream Act.

Whatever your motivation, your position strikes me, and many other loyal Latino Republicans like me, as needlessly harsh and insensitive. It doesn’t help the image of the Republican Party in the eyes of the growing Latino electorate who will either make us or break in the upcoming elections.

What you’re doing is defending a bad law that punishes good people.

Keeping the current broken immigration policy is a lousy idea. We’ve had lousy ideas before. Take Prohibition for example. High-minded moralists thought it would be great to pass a law to prevent people from drinking liquor. But when it proved to be a bad idea, we got rid of it. When the law was recanted, no one asked, “How are going to punish the millions who drank liquor illegally for years?” Instead, we rewarded those who had knowingly violated our laws for by giving them total amnesty.

Why was that OK? Maybe because “we” got the amnesty, not “them”.

Amnesty is not a bad word as you suggest. In fact, amnesty is as American as apple pie. Every time we try to talk ourselves out of a traffic ticket, we are asking for amnesty. Every time we get our lawyer to fix a traffic ticket, we give ourselves amnesty.

We gave amnesty to American soldiers who left for Canada to avoid fighting in Viet Nam. Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants in the 80’s. In time, those immigrants became productive and contributing citizens. President Reagan’s wisdom on this issue lent the Republican party an image of understanding and sensitivity.

That image was good for Reagan and good for our party. It helped him attain 37% of the Latino vote in ’84, and created a base that grew to 44% for President George W. Bush in 2004. In fact, the Latino vote was the deciding factor in Florida in 2000 when Bush received 6,000 more Latino votes than Al Gore. And as we all know, Bush was a pro-immigrant president.

You oppose The Dream Act on the grounds that it would encourage illegal immigration, but you’re wrong on this point too. The only thing that encourages illegal immigration is jobs. The jobs Americans offer.

We need new immigrants for many reasons. One reason is to keep us young, vital and growing. Another reason is do the work we don’t teach (and don’t want to teach) our own children to do.

We call the workers criminals for taking jobs. But we don’t call ourselves criminals for offering the jobs.  We’re complicit in this thing, so it’s time we owned up to it.  We’re 50% of the “criminal” act.

You make a good point when you say that the American people want Congress to focus on creating jobs and getting Americans back to work. But that doesn’t mean we should choose to turn our backs on millions of good, hard-working people we lured here with the promise of a better wage.

Something else you say is true. For the past 22 months the unemployment rate has stayed around 9 percent while seven million “illegal” individuals are hard at work. But do you honestly think an unemployed autoworker in Michigan (used to earning $40 dollars and hour) would move to Southern California to pick grapes in the hot sun for 8 bucks an hour?  Think again.

By opposing the Dream Act, you would deport thousands of high school and college students willing to serve in our military, earn a college degree and do us proud; to a country most don’t remember and haven’t even visited. And more importantly, why would we waste that kind of talent and commitment at a time when America needs it most?

Granted, their parents came here without papers. Still, why not show a little compassion and recognize those parents for contributing to our economy for years with their hard, tireless work, for the taxes they’ve paid and for the social security benefits they’ll never receive? Why not recognize them for bringing up kids who would obviously make great Americans?

A stable American economy requires that we add at least 3 million new immigrant workers a year. Still we issue only 400,000 visas. What kind of sense does that make? We create “criminals” by continuing to issue fewer visas than the workers we need. By the way, don’t let the 3 million figure scare you. It’s only 1% of the population. That percentage of new immigrant influx, relative to our population, hasn’t changed in a hundred years.

My advice is vote for the Dream Act. Then fix immigration. Don’t do it for the goodwill it would earn for the Republican Party among Latino voters in upcoming elections. Do it because it’s the American thing to do. Do what Ronald Reagan did. Give them papers. Make them legal. Give them amnesty. If we have no illegal workers, we have no criminals. With no criminals, we have no issue to quarrel over.

Lionel Sosa was media advisor to presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

22 Democratic Senators Support the DREAM Act in Letter to President Obama

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Maybe the reasonable thinking Republican will take heed to this note in order to retain the shrinking Latino Republican support we are witnessing.

I recently learned that 22 Democratic Senators wrote a letter to the President with regard to the DREAM Act.  This is good and a step in the right direction, however, it is also depressing for me in the sense that I see the Republican Party losing on this front.  It used to be that the Republicans were the ones who championed the DREAM, and now we see the Democratic Senators taking up this issue. Not only that, our only Latino Republican Senator Marco Rubio, has opposed the DREAM Act, too.

I can assure you that this move is a political move by the Democratic Senators to maintain their power in the Senate because Republicans are focused on the Senate seats, too.  They know they will have to provide a 2012 Presidential Candidate that will be able to raise over $550,000.00 per day, and I’m afraid it will be hard for the Republican Party to find a candidate that can raise that much money.  Since it is going to be very hard to find a Presidential Candidate that has the ability to raise the money that Obama can, the GOP will put their emphasis and their energy on the Senate in an effort to further limit Obama’s presidency.

We know that the anti-SB 1070 Latinos (which accounts for most of us) will not really risk their votes with Republicans unless those Republican candidates have proven themselves to our community such as Senator Lugar of Indiana.

I only hope that these 22 Senators will not get the hopes of our youth high only to see the same thing we saw in December 2010. In fact, I am told that Senator Scott Brown will not support the DREAM Act because DREAMers rallied at his office.  I sincerely hope Mr. Brown changes his mind, and even though I wouldn’t necessarily spend my energy in protests, he should realize that these kids and our youth are desperate and are stuck in limbo.  We should never advocate punishing children for the sins of their father.

I noticed that Senator Harry Reid was the first person to sign the DREAM Act letter to President, and he remembers who saved his political career when he promised to put the DREAM Act on the floor.  Of course, the Tea Party extremist — Sharron Angle depicted Latinos in  negative light, too, and it ultimately cost her the elections because she thought she didn’t need the Latino vote.

It has come to our attention the Department of Homeland Security sent Prerna Lal – one of the founders of “Dream Activist” – a Notice to Appear for removal proceedings.  We can only ask the Obama administration to use their prosecutorial discretion and not deport this DREAMer.  Why was this individual targeted?

In order for the Republicans to gain back the Latino Republican share that Bush had in 2004 when he received 44% of the Latino vote, they must do more than ‘tone down the anti-immigration rhetoric’.  They must show in their actions that they want to fix the broken immigration system.

In the internet age we live in, Latinos are becoming more and more aware of our political environment.

Please read the Senator Harry Reid DREAM Act Letter.

Republicans need to be concerned about losing the future GOP vote with legal and eligible Latino voters that are becoming of age in light of our explosive growth.
