Marco Rubio, Will you show “them” your papers, please?

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

From the NATIONAL TEQUILA PARTY MOVEMENT (a Hispanic female-led political national movement that counters the Tea Party and rocks the Latino Vote).

Rubio, Will you show them your papers, please?

Early this year in June, 2011, I attended an immigration summit in Washington D.C., sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, called “Immigration Works and Conservatives for Immigration Reform.” One of the reasons I wanted to attend was to try to strengthen Latino and Jewish relationships. Together, immigration advocates made several Senate and Congressional visits.

About a dozen of us visited Senator Marco Rubio’s office where we met with one of his staffers. Senator Rubio’s aide told a group of Florida constituents who had just attended the immigration conference that the Senator was against the Dream Act because it was a form of “amnesty.” The aide stressed to the group that Senator Rubio’s family came to the United States via legal mechanisms, and the Senator believed that others should follow the law.

Is that so?

Recent articles have pointed out that Senator Rubio’s parents first entered the United States in l956, prior to the Cuban Revolution of 1959. His mother returned to Cuba in l961, weeks before the Bay of Pigs invasion, but only for a couple of weeks and she decided to return to the USA in exile. Given Senator Rubio’s intransigent position on immigration reform, his own family’s immigration history should be examined under a microscope.

What was the legal status of his parents and older siblings who were born in Cuba, in the United States between l956 and 1966? Were they visa overstays? If not, what was their legal status, and where is the proof of such legal status? It is important to note that less than half of our country’s present undocumented population of about 10 million entered the country via the United States’ border with Mexico – the rest entered with a visa and overstayed. Visa overstays are as undocumented as those that cross the border.

Senator Rubio’s parents had a daughter born in the United States between the period of l956 and l966, a time period where their legal status is unclear. Senator Rubio’s sister would not be allowed to be a United States citizen pursuant to legislation that some in his Tea Party are introducing – which would change the 14th Amendment to not grant citizenship to children born in the United States to one or two undocumented parents.

The generous “Cuban Adjustment Act” of November 2, 1966, seems to have given Senator Rubio’s family a shot at the American dream. It seems that Senator Rubio’s parents after 10 years of a questionable immigration status – or as visa overstays – were able to become legal, with what many call, “the Cuban Amnesty.” To this day, any Cuban that is inspected or paroled into the United States can become a Legal Permanent Resident a year after they first enter. This law also grants this status to a Cuban national that crosses the United States’ Mexican border illegally. Senator Rubio’s brother, Mario, became a United States citizen in 1971. Legal Permanent Residents can apply to become naturalized United States citizens five years after they are allowed to become Legal Permanent Residents. It is interesting to note that Senator Rubio’s brother became a naturalized United States citizen in 1971, five years after the Cuban Adjustment Act.

Carlos Roa, one of the four courageous “Dream Walkers” who on January 1, 2011, walked 1,500 miles from Miami, Florida to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of the Dream Act, has parallels to Senator Rubio’s immigration story. Carlos was brought to the United States from Venezuela by his parents with a visa when he was two years of age. His parents perhaps decided to remain in the United States, in “exile” as a result of President Chavez’ close links to Castro’s Cuba and the changed political landscape in Venezuela. Unlike Senator Rubio’s brother, Mario, Congress has not enacted the “Venezuelan Adjustment Act.” There are about 2 million children brought to this country by their parents, many escaping repressive governments, others escaping abject poverty, while their parents fill our nation’s labor needs in many industries. The rule of law is important, and we must strive to fix our broken immigration system to promote legal migration and give us an immigration system that makes us globally competitive for the 21st century.

We hope that Senator Rubio joins Republican Representative Ileana Ros Lehiten to work across the aisle with Senator Bob Menendez and give our nation sensible immigration reform that is needed to help our economy as well. Our current enforcement approach to a broken system is fiscally irresponsible. If Senator Rubio fails to work for the good of our nation and give back to others what this nation did for his family, we will continue to demand from his parents and siblings born in Cuba from 1956 to 1966, their “papers, please.”

It was unfortunate for me to learn about Rubio defending Arizona’s “papers, please” law, but now birthers and nativists are asking his family to show their papers. What it amounts to is that at the end of the day Rubio is just like the rest of us.

The Christian Post understands the political risks 2012 GOP Candidates are taking with Hispanic vote

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

The Christian Post understands the political risks the GOP Presidential Candidates are considering when they are wanting to boycott UNIVISION over Senator Marco Rubio. Marco Rubio has fractured relationships between Cubans (consists of 3% of total Hispanic population) and the largest Hispanic ethnic group (those of Mexican descent accounting for almost 70% of Hispanic population).

From the Christian Post:

The candidates who are boycotting Univision are “committing Hispanic political suicide,” Blase said. “Univision is the number-one Spanish network in the nation,” and “the lifeline of Hispanic media.”

Blase said Somos Republicans was already upset with Rubio for saying that he does not support “amnesty” for illegal immigrants, because, as a Cuban-American, his family has already benefited from an amnesty-like government program.

Republican candidates who support the boycott, “are trying to appease the Cuban-American population” at the expense of the rest of the Latino community, Blase said.

“Do they want to go after the 3 percent (Cuban-American population, prominent in Florida) or do they want to go after the 70 to 75 percent (Mexican-American population, prominent in the Southwest)? That is what I see taking place with their moronic move, fighting Univision,” Blase said.

Prediction: If GOP boycott against UNIVISION continues, Obama administration will gain Latin support he lost earlier this year

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Just when you think things couldn’t’ get any worse….the GOP Presidential candidates go and insert their foot into their mouths.  However, take a look at who began the problem?  Yup, Republican Cuban politicians who are already benefiting from Cuban amnesty under the Cuban Adjustment Act as well as government and tax payer funded benefits.

In a letter Monday to the Republican National Committee, U.S. Rep. David Rivera and state Reps. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and Erik Fresen also demanded that Univision apologize and fire its news president, Isaac Lee.   We believe asking UNIVISION to stop exposing Sen. Marco Rubio’s hypocrisy would be like asking the Cuban community to boycott Cuban amnesty under the Cuban Adjustment Act.

All Obama administration has to do now in order to gain the Latin support he lost earlier this year is to spend more money with UNIVISION.  For the record:  UNIVISION is the largest Spanish network our country has ever known.

GOPers who fall prey to what 3% Cuban community will face the consequences in 2012.

President George W. Bush had 44% Hispanic voters in 2004.  John McCain’s Latin support in 2008 dwindled to 31% in 2008, and if GOP Presidential candidates continue to not really understand Latin politics….they will be on a path to secure Latin supporters that will be primarily isolated to Florida as they put the entire southwestern Latino population at risk.

It’s simple math.  67% of Latin population are of Mexican descent while only 3% are of Cuban descent.

GOP Presidential Candidate Boycott a Latino Political Suicide for 2012 Presidential Elections

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Republican Presidential candidates are committing political suicide with Latino voters in the entire southwest.  Asking UNIVISION to reverse exposing Sen. Marco Rubio’s hypocrisy would be like asking Cubanos in Florida to boycott the Cuban Adjustment Act.

The GOP Candidates are cutting off their noses to spite their faces with their ideas of boycotting UNIVISION because UNIVISION is the largest Spanish network in the country. All President Obama has to do is spend more money in marketing to the fastest and largest minority demographic in the nation via UNIVISION. GOPers are limiting themselves to a small Floridian portion as you take a look at the big picture and as you take a look at where most Hispanics reside. GOP Candidates are risking the entire southwest for the one state of Florida even though most of the Latin growth comes from the southwest – not Florida.

GOP candidates cannot appease the TEA PARTY and Latinos at the same time, particularly when many within the Tea Party (such as Sen. Marco Rubio) have supported harsh anti-immigrant laws. The only way out of this toxic mess is for Republicans to address the broken immigration system with a free market solution in which they claim to stand for. This further demonstrates to me how fearful all GOP Presidential candidates are of the immigration issue except for the former New Mexico Governor – Gary Johnson.

GOP Candidates must learn that Rubio created a wedge between Cuban and Mexican relations when he supported Arizona’s harsh law and voiced against the DREAM Act. Rubio has been disingenuous in claiming he is against “amnesty” while his own Floridian and Cuban immigrants have benefitted from Cuban amnesty as well as tax payer government funded benefits once their foot touches dry American soil.

Those of Mexican descent are not asking for government benefits, they are simply asking for a reasonable solution to the broken immigration system.

Where are the Emerging Mexican- American evangelical leaders?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Where are the Emerging Mexican- American evangelical leaders?

There are two Latin cultural groups that really do not have to worry about the immigration issue as much as the other Latin groups:  Puerto Ricans and Cubans.  Cubans receive a unique amnesty privilege along with one year of government entitlements via the Cuban Adjustment Act.  And, under the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans are automatically U.S. citizens.

One of the strongest immigration advocates in our nation today is not a man of the cloth or the evangelical leader of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC);  (D-IL) Congressman Luis Gutierrez who recently finished a 25 city tour promoting sensible immigration ideas.  Gutierrez is of Puerto-Rican descent and  well-liked by most Latinos across the nation because he has fought his own party in holding them accountable towards legal immigration reform.  So why isn’t the conservative Reverend Samuel Rodriguez holding Senator Marco Rubio accountable for his anti-immigrant views?  In fact, Rodriguez is the leader of the NHCLC.

Like Gutierrez, Rodriguez is also of Puerto-Rican descent; however, I find it odd that there are little national Mexican-American clergy leaders to be found when those of Mexican descent account for almost 70% of the Hispanic population pie.  I am glad to see leading evangelical Hispanic leadership, though I believe leadership also needs to come from the community that is being hurt and affected the most regarding immigration.

There is a strong need for Mexican-American emerging voices.

In the old days, members of the clergy were the ones who committed themselves into being the sacrificial lambs in the fight for social justice, as was the case with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was jailed numerous times.  These days things have reversed as we are witnessing politicians and US representatives getting jailed for social justice.

I have to wonder why Rev. Rodriguez has not issued a statement with regard to President Obama’s small step in the right direction – specifically with regard to the small amount of deportation relief of 300,000 who are currently in deportation proceedings.  I’m sure the family members of at least 300,000 are appreciative for the relief, specifically as it relates to the non-criminal element of the undocumented.

The goal right now is to be hawkish and look for politicians who are brave enough to support pro-immigration related issues when the public has been misinformed by the likes of Senator Rubio. We should be quick to reward any and all politicians who make small steps toward immigration reform.  Latinos for legal immigration should send a clear and consistent signal to politicians that we will provide political covering to those who support DREAM or comprehensive legal immigration.

We were appreciative to learn that on June 28, 2001, Samuel Rodriguez wrote a letter in support of the DREAM Act.  However, on August 4th, 2011, Rev. Rodriguez suggested to the Christian Post that Rubio ought to run as 2012 Vice President.  We are unsure whether or not Sam knows about Rubio’s anti-immigrant history, but we hope to clarify to him that Rubio embraced Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law (SB 1070), opposes the DREAM Act, and supports Rep. Lamar Smith’s enforcement only policies.  It was my view that members of the clergy were to be no ‘respecter of persons’ which is why we are disappointed in Reverend Rodriguez.  We believe that promoting Rubio  parallels the Trojan Horse trick.

While we cannot really say undocumented immigrants are slaves or legally forced into labor here in the United States, the immigration issue is still an important economic one.  Not enough has been said that immigrants have helped to contribute to the American economy.   Legal immigration will dump millions in tax revenues and increase the American standard of living.

I am not religious nor am I anything like Moses, but it seems to me that evangelical leadership should come from those who are affected the most.  I believe leaders of Mexican descent and/or other Latin groups who do not benefit from unique amnesty or automatic citizenship need to rise up because they are the ones who are most affected and we need their compassionate understanding.

Why did the YHWH, the God of Israel use Moses?  According to Jewish scripture, Moses was raised by Egyptians, yet he still had compassion for his people.  His compassion was so great that he could not bear to see them beaten by Pharaoh’s taskmasters.  One day, Moses saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew slave and he was so outraged that he struck and killed the Egyptian  forcing him to flee from Egypt.  Perhaps Moses struck the oppressor because he had more compassion for his people.

Reverend Rodriguez should recant his support for Rubio or else hand his mantle to an emerging Mexican-American leader who empathizes with the pain of most Mexicans who are getting deported.  We encourage Reverend Rodriguez to carry out his due diligence before promoting anymore anti-immigrant politicians.  Holding immigration summits in various parts of the nation mean very little when the leader is promoting oppressive politicians.

Tight lipped, Olivia Cortes, hangs sign on her campaign door: “No volunteers or help wanted”.

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

I have never, ever, ever heard of a politician who does not need volunteer support or help as they try to get elected into office.

That’s right!  Olivia Cortes told me today that she does not want volunteers nor does she want any help.  She is extremely tight lipped with regard to the operation of her campaign.  She lives with her sister Lianora (sp?), and her own sister does not know a thing about the campaign either.  Strange isn’t it?

Why is Olivia being so secretive as she runs for ‘public office’?  Why won’t she answer questions from concerned citizens?  Why does she believe that she is not entitled to answer questions from the people who she wants to vote for her?

Something smells fishy, and I am going to have to point the fishes out:  1) Chuck Coughlin 2) Matt Tolman 3) Jesse Hernandez and David Schweikert.

It’s time for us to get on the radio to inform Latinos that Pearce may have found his “malinche” and wants Latinos to accidently vote for the “Hispanic” with her “Hispanic surname” the way some voted for Marco Rubio.

We are on to Pearce’s slithering ways.  It’s time we get on Latin radio.  Pearce is scared because he was recalled, and now he is attempting the old tactic of trying to divert, split and conquer.  Not gonna happen, Pearce.  Your time is running out.

Russell Pearce’s Mystery “Challenger” Olivia Cortes Speaks, Kinda-Sorta

The advantage to Pearce of having a woman with a Latino name on the ballot is obvious. Political insiders from Mesa have indicated that this is part of Pearce’s strategy to win: Dilute the anti-Pearce vote by offering up candidates other than Republican contender Jerry Lewis.

Tea Party Republicans who threatened the US AAA Bond rating

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Here is the list  of Tea Party Senate Republicans who threatened the AAA Bond rating with Senator DeMint being the king of the tea party terrorists because they have held our economy hostage.  They are on record for wanting to shut down the government like anarchists, and now they want nothing to do with bipartisanship.  Ronald Reagan was a good President because he worked across the aisle.  What makes tea party politicians better than Reagan?  Why don’t they acknowledge that Reagan increased taxes, too?

Pat Toomey (R-PA) 202.224.4254

Marco Rubio (R-FL) 202.224.3041

Rand Paul (R-KY) 202.224.4343

Mike Lee (R-UT) 202.224.5444

Ron Johnson (R-WI) 202.224.5323

Our markets started to take a dive here in the U.S. then the rest of the world because the teahadists are unreasonable and have become a party of “no”.  One Tea Party Republican, Eric Cantor, was caught shorting the market putting himself in a position to benefit when the markets failed.  Go figure.

Who in their right mind would want to put their money against US Markets yet call themselves a true patriot?

Be sure to call these tea party Republicans and tell them you are tired of their political games.  These individuals believe the entire US population voted “only them” in not realizing that the American people have voted in several hundred politicians from diverse backgrounds across the political spectrum around the nation. It’s unfortunate the Republican Party has been hijacked by freshmen and crying babies.

Joe Nocera writes:

Tea Party’s War on America

These last few months, much of the country has watched in horror as the Tea Party Republicans have waged jihad on the American people. Their intransigent demands for deep spending cuts, coupled with their almost gleeful willingness to destroy one of America’s most invaluable assets, its full faith and credit, were incredibly irresponsible. But they didn’t care. Their goal, they believed, was worth blowing up the country for, if that’s what it took.

Like ideologues everywhere, they scorned compromise. When John Boehner, the House speaker, tried to cut a deal with President Obama that included some modest revenue increases, they humiliated him. After this latest agreement was finally struck on Sunday night — amounting to a near-complete capitulation by Obama — Tea Party members went on Fox News to complain that it only called for $2.4 trillion in cuts, instead of $4 trillion. It was head-spinning.

Marco Rubio: Amnesty for ‘me’ but not for ‘thee’

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

Latino / Hispanic Republican / SOMOS REPUBLICANS largest GOP group in United States

Here’s the reality.  Mexican-Americans account for almost 70% of the Latin population pie.  However, Cuban-Americans account for 3% of the pie.

Why is Senator Marco Rubio supporting a unique amnesty and government entitlements via the Cuban Adjustment Act afforded to the Cubans (with heavy concentration in Florida), but he damns the rest of the Latino ethnic groups who want to achieve the same American Dream that was afforded to his family?

Will Senator Marco Rubio who claims to be for less government insist on protecting the unique Cuban amnesty and at least one year of government entitlements using our tax payer dollar?

That said, Marco Rubio still has  not officially taken back his support for the Arizona harsh anti-immigrant law where he blamed “just the Mexicans” on drug violence (even though his own brother in law — a Cuban immigrant was busted with one of the biggest drug trafficking violations in Florida history).  It gets worse, Marco Rubio still DOES NOT SUPPORT THE DREAM Act.  We want to see reasonable action, and so far both  Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz  (both of which are Cuban-Americans) support enforcement only policies and “large government policies” via the national e-verify bill.

I support the Cuban Adjustment Act, but I do not support Tea party politicians who forget that their relatives and family had compassion afforded to them.  We are not asking for amnesty with entitlements that are afforded to Cubans via the wet foot dry foot policy, all we are asking for is a secure border plan and legal immigration reform — without the government entitlements. We believe that’s reasonable.

With our plan, there will be less shark deaths and less desert deaths if we promote a healthy and reasonable legal immigration plan from a clearly broken immigration system.  Will Senator Marco Rubio get on right side of the immigration issue and co-sponsor Senator Menendez’s legal immigration bill? Several GOP lawmakers have implemented their version of anti-immigrant laws because they say the federal government has not fixed it.  Since Rubio is part of the federal government system now, he can display leadership at a ‘federal level’ by working towards a broken immigration system alongside Senator Menendez’s bill with a legal immigration reform plan.

Senator Marco Rubio fractures relationships with Mexican-Americans in the southwest

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Senator Marco Rubio is not the only politician who offended the Mexican-American community and other Latin immigrants — Ted Cruz, who wants to run for Texas Senator is on the wrong side of the immigration issue, too.   Ted Cruz will not be elected in the State of Texas because a growing number of Mexican-Americans in Texas are finding out about the unique form of “amnesty” called the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act provided Cuban refugees myriad ways to enter the United States legally.  This is why Marco Rubio  and Ted Cruz feel comfortable damning the rest of the Latin immigrants.

I support the Cuban Adjustment Act, but we now need an “Immigration Adjustment Act”, too.

Ruben Navarrette is a columnist who writes for approximately 120 newspapers across the nation.  Read the  entire article here:

It’s one of the reasons that Rubio’s stock has dropped with Latino voters outside Florida’s Cuban-American community, which represents just 3 percent of the U.S. Latino population. Rubio’s main selling point to fellow Republicans — in Congress and the presidential campaign trail — had been that he might be able to help the GOP make peace with disaffected Latinos in the Southwest who are tired of being treated like piñatas by opportunistic Republican politicians.

Naturalized Mexicans and Mexican-Americans — who together make up 67 percent of Latinos — want politicians to deal with the immigration issue in a fair, honest, and thoughtful way. They want reasonable solutions that go beyond slogans, simple solutions, and “enforcement only” policies that don’t acknowledge the economic dimension to the problem.

…………

With his ham-handed treatment of the immigration issue, Rubio has insulted those moderate Republicans who support comprehensive immigration reform — George W. Bush, Jeb Bush, Carlos Gutierrez, Norm Coleman, Jon Huntsman, et al. They all stuck their necks out on this issue and took heat for it.

The problem isn’t just that Rubio made all these missteps. It’s that, when the issue is immigration, he’s not in a position to make any. He’s not like most of his Republican colleagues in Washington. He has an additional burden, stemming from his own ethnic background. As a Cuban-American whose father and mother came to this country in the late 1950s — even before that unique form of “amnesty” called the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act provided Cuban refugees myriad ways to enter the United States legally — Rubio needs to tread lightly on this issue. Not every immigrant from Latin America, or the Caribbean, or Africa, or Asia gets the red treatment afforded to many Cubans — at least those who can reach the U.S. shoreline.

Above all, Marco Rubio forgot the “eight minute rule.”

There are Mexican-Americans in states like Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico who can trace their ancestry in this country back hundreds of years. Many of them are rightfully offended when they’re profiled by local police, or words like “amnesty” are thrown around, or the 14th Amendment is threatened, or when college students brought here by their parents are denied a shot at legal status. And so when you’re a junior senator, and you clumsily stomp into that morass, it doesn’t hurt to be humble — especially when your own family has only been in this country for the equivalent of eight minutes.

Marco Rubio is a sell out

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Ruben Navarrette a nationally known columnist who writes for 120 newspapers around the country hits the nail on it’s head with regard to Marco Rubio. I was sick to my stomach when this supposed “rising Hispanic star” embraced Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law, is also against the DREAM Act, and is now for national e-verify and enforcement only policies.

The e-verify supporters,  anti-immigrant and tea party whackos are using Marco Rubio as their puppet, but make no mistake:  culture will always inevitably come before politics.  Marco Rubio is Cuban-American where Cubans have the privilege of the wet foot dry foot policy, however, other Latin groups do not share that same privilege.  How ’bout we apply the wet foot dry foot policy to all other Latin groups who are escaping their corrupt governments to achieve the American Dream?  Then we can all be “legal immigrants, too” once the foot of an immigrant touches dry land, right?

GREAT ARTICLE BY RUBEN!  He writes about the southwestern Latin pulse!

P.S.  I hope he writes about Ted Cruz being a sell out in Texas because Ted Cruz is another GOPer who embraces anti-immigrant and enforcement only policies.

Has Marco Rubio sold out?

By Ruben Navarrette, Published: July 8

Poor Marco Rubio. Florida’s junior senator could have been a contender. Instead, he’s become a caricature.

In parts of the Hispanic community, Rubio is thought of as just another ambitious politician who is willing to sell out Latinos to curry favor with Anglo colleagues. That’s what you hear from Internet chatter, letters to the editor, Latino listservs and comments on Spanish-language media.

Just seven months after taking office, the Republicans’ great Latino hope has squandered the one thing that made him unique, interesting and valuable to his party: the potential that he could help mend fences with disaffected Latino voters alienated by the GOP’s simplistic and mean-spirited approach to the immigration issue.
