Dear Democratic legislators,
Senator Sinema recently wrote you an email, and my responses are below in bold. Please know the Hispanic community stands in solidarity against SB 1225.
“Fellow Democrats, It has come to my attention that Somos Republicans issued an email to all House and Senate Democrats (myself excepted) regarding my bill, SB 1255. Some of you may also have read recent blog postings spreading inaccurate information about SB 1225.”
Arizona Hispanic Leaders are standing in solidarity against SB 1225. If you know of any strong Hispanic Immigration activists who are in support of SB 1225, please provide those names to us right away. Most of the Democratic Hispanic Community puts their trust in Rep. Steve Gallardo because he rolls his sleeves up and makes time for them. If Sinema can get Steve Gallardo to put his support behind SB 1225, then we will stop screaming about the bill Senator Sinema sponsored (and has overwhelming Republican support). Hispanic Democratic activist (David Abie Morales), was one of the first persons to bring light and attention to Senator Sinema’s slippery slope. She also openly professed her “love” of Russell Pearce which can be seen here and is being criticized by our community. A few days later, I started to receive phone calls from members of the Hispanic community, too. Lawyers who are members of SOMOS REPUBLICANS also agree that Senator Sinema is over-criminalizing laws that are already on the books.
“I would like to take a few moments to share the true facts with you about this legislation. First, this bill was authored by Attorney General Terry Godard in 2009…..”
2009 is considered the pre-SB 1070 era. That was then and this is now. After SB 1070 was signed by Governor Brewer, the entire Hispanic Community has been on alert and anxiety has been heightened. Arizona Latinos are still upset that we did not receive advance notice by those who claim to represent “minorities”. It should be evident to every single Democratic and Republican legislator that Arizona Hispanics have been stirred, and we are now tracking legislation and keeping score. In fact, these days you may have witnessed several of us attending hearings at the Capitol and this should attest to our concerns about these immigration laws. David Morales and local Phoenix Hispanic Democratic Activists are planning a large protest to rally against Sinema’s SB1225 Bill, and members of SOMOS REPUBLICANS will be there in solidarity. Latinos are fed up with legislators treating the immigration issue like a political football, and since Sinema wants to risk being the first Democratic legislator who “wants to get tough on immigration”, then we will remind her that she is going against the “will of the People” whom she represents. There is a high percentage of Latinos in her district, and we will remind them of how she chooses to over-criminalize laws that are already on the books.
“David Lujan, Eddie Abeleser, Anna Tovar, and David Schapira.”
Let the record be known that David Lujan was absent when SB 1070 was being voted upon. The Hispanic community remembers that.
“Second, this bill seeks to increase the penalty for individuals who meet two criminal elements…..”
I have expressed multiple times to Ms. Sinema that Arizona is notorious for over-criminalizing laws that are already on the books. By Sinema’s own confession in her own press release, she boasted of sponsoring SB 1225 ‘that gets tough on… illegal immigration’ and passed the Senate Border Security.
Democratic Activist, David Morales writes his concern below and you can read the rest here. Do Democratic legislators want to take the slippery slope in the continued over-criminalization of immigration laws here in Arizona? If you do, I get to point my fingers at you as the founder and President of largest Hispanic Republican group in the nation, to say you are really no different than Russell Pearce and Republicans who are in the business of enforcement-only policies as they continue to inundate us with these immigration laws.
David Morales wrote:
This article will be as objective as possible and will make a logical argument regarding SB1225.
Some have heard that this bill stops rape, some have heard that it is pro-immigrant, some have heard that it goes after non-criminal immigrants, others may have heard that this bill “saves all the cute little kittens out there.”
I will provide evidence that this bill can be misused, and provide evidence that Kyrsten Sinema knows about this misuse.
Put aside anything you have heard, and let’s look at what the bill actually says, not what the author or opponents think of it.
Read David’s piece here.
The choice is yours. If Democratic legislators choose to go down that slippery slope Senator Sinema is on, you will wind up on our 2012 “unfriendly to Hispanics list” because you have been warned of Latino sentiment. I cannot be clearer to you: WE ARE FED UP WITH THE ONSLAUGHT OF THESE ANTI-IMMIGRANT LAWS WE FACE ALMOST EVERY DAY IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA. Remember, there are 800,000 LEGAL and eligible Hispanic voters in the State of Arizona, and only 400,000 of us are registered to vote right now. There were approximately 43,000 new Hispanic registered voters between the time in which Jan Brewer signed SB 1070 to one month before the November 2010 elections. Don’t you think we will have approximately 200,000 more new Hispanic registered voters by 2012? Of course we will. The Latino giant is awake now.
Please do not put your fingerprints on SB 1225. If you want to be nationally recognized as a Democratic legislator in the State of Arizona who is following in the same footsteps as Russell Pearce, then sign it.
