Get 911 alerts for your neighborhood via cellphone

Don’t have a land line anymore? Register your cellphone number for 911 alerts for your neighborhood.

The Maricopa Association of Governments, a coalition of local governments that serves as a planning agency for Greater Phoenix, this week urged Maricopa County residents to sign up online at 911alertsyou.com.

The service links residents’ cellphones with a home or work address in a database so they can receive notifications of emergencies near the registered address.

The service has been available for at least a year, but only 8,700 cellphone users in the area have signed up for notifications, MAG officials said.

The system is used for emergencies such as fires, flash floods and public-safety threats.

About 30 percent of households in Maricopa County use cellphones instead of land telephone lines, according to MAG data.
