Prosecutor: Mom contaminated infant daughter’s IVs at hospital

TUCSON — A prosecutor says a woman on trial in Tucson contaminated her hospitalized infant daughter’s intravenous lines in an attempt to get attention from the girl’s father.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that Blanca Reneis Montano, 23, is charged with attempted murder and child abuse.

5 held in Conn. $4M jewelry heist, kidnapping

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Authorities say five people have been arrested in the robbery of $4 million in jewelry from a Connecticut store in an elaborate heist that began with the kidnapping of store employees more than 40 miles away.
Federal prosecutors in Connecticut say the five were charged but did not immediately release additional information. Two defendants are scheduled to appear Thursday afternoon in federal court in Bridgeport.

Ex-lawmaker facing meth-trafficking charges

BOSTON — A former Massachusetts lawmaker who more recently worked as a tutor at a Boston charter school has been held on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty to drug charges.
Authorities say 57-year-old Stephen Doran (DOHR’-un) was arrested this week after allegedly receiving a package containing nearly 500 grams of methamphetamine while at work at the Match Charter Public Middle School. Police say a search of his Dorchester home yielded more meth, as well as $10,000 in cash and drug weighing and packaging materials.

Service for Phoenix officer killed during traffic stop to be held Saturday

A Phoenix police officer killed in a hit-and-run accident Sunday will be buried Saturday following a funeral service the same day.The department says the service for Officer Daryl Raetz will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria.Immediately following the service, Raetz will be interred at Phoenix Memorial Park.Raetz was fatally injured when struck by a vehicle while at the scene of a DUI stop.

Man linked to Boston suspect killed by FBI

A Chechen immigrant was shot to death by authorities early Wednesday after he turned violent while being questioned about his ties to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, officials said.
Ibragim Todashev, a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter, was gunned down at his Orlando townhouse during a meeting with an FBI agent and two Massachusetts state troopers, authorities said. The agent was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

GRAPEVINE, Texas — As protesters made one last stand, the Boy Scouts of America’s leadership began a conference Wednesday that was expected to culminate in a long-anticipated vote on whether to allow openly gay Scouts — a decision that, either way, could deeply affect the organization’s membership and funding.
Scouting leaders from around the country gathered at a resort in Grapevine, Texas, near the youth organization’s suburban Dallas headquarters, for their annual national meeting. The three-day meeting is being closely watched because Scout officials have scheduled a vote Thursday on a resolution that would not allow youth Scouts to be excluded based only on sexual orientation. The ban on gay adult leaders would remain in place.

Crews wrapping up search for tornado survivors

MOORE, Okla. — The search for survivors and the dead was nearly complete Tuesday in the broken remnants of an Oklahoma City suburb where a massive tornado flattened homes and demolished an elementary school, the fire chief said. Authorities lowered the death toll to 24, down from 51.
Fire Chief Gary Bird said that he’s “98 percent sure” there are no more survivors or bodies to recover under the rubble in the town of Moore. He said every damaged home had been searched at least once and that he’s hopeful the work could be completed by nightfall Tuesday, though heavy rains slowed efforts.

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal court in San Francisco Tuesday struck down Arizona’s ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law violates a string of U.S. Supreme Court rulings starting with Roe v. Wade that guarantees a woman’s right to an abortion before a fetus is able to survive outside the womb. That’s generally considered to be about 24 weeks. Normal pregnancies run about 40 weeks

$1 million Powerball ticket sold in Chandler

A $1 million Powerball winning ticket was sold in Chandler before Saturday’s record-breaking jackpot, Arizona Lottery officials said.
Another one was sold in Safford. The winning tickets matched 5 out of 5 numbers drawn but didn’t include the Powerball number.

Tornadoes touch down in Kansas, Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. — A powerful storm system rumbled through the Plains and upper Midwest on Sunday, spawning tornadoes that damaged homes and buildings near Oklahoma City and put the Tulsa area on high-alert.
There were no immediate reports of injuries caused by any of the tornadoes that touched down in Oklahoma and Kansas, including one that hit the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond before moving northeast toward Tulsa, 90 miles to the northeast.

‘Amazing’ no one died in Conn. train crash

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut — Officials described a devastating scene of shattered cars and other damage where two trains packed with rush-hour commuters collided in Connecticut, saying Saturday it’s amazing that no one was killed.
Seventy-two people were sent to the hospital Friday evening after the crash, which damaged the tracks and threatened to snarl travel in the Northeast Corridor.

TUCSON — A group of wild turkeys is now roaming Mount Lemmon after being captured at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
Managers with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the base’s cultural and natural resources office had been monitoring the birds’ movement through eastside neighborhoods until they were in a location where they could be captured without harm.

BULLHEAD CITY — Bullhead City police say a Craigslist ad for a cellphone is what led detectives to a man they suspect of counterfeiting.
Dean Everett Boyer was arrested earlier this week on charges of forgery, fraudulent schemes and possession of a forging instrument. He was booked into the Mohave County jail in Kingman.

Boy Scouts to vote soon on accepting gay youth

With its ranks deeply divided, the Boy Scouts of America is asking its local leaders from across the country to decide whether its controversial membership policy should be overhauled so that openly gay boys can participate in Scout units.
The proposal to be put before the roughly 1,400 voting members of the BSA’s National Council on Thursday, at a meeting in Grapevine, Texas, would retain the Scouts’ long-standing ban on gays serving in adult leadership positions.
