Will Gabrielle Giffords Be Back To Legislate For Her Constituents?

by on Jun. 12, 2011, under Arizona Politics, Arizona's 50th legislature, Health Care, House of Representatives, Immigration, National Politics, Sarah Palin, State Senate, Tea Party, Tucson, Uncategorized

We continue to pray for Gabrielle Giffords who as we all know is the victim of a gunshot wound rendered by a psychotic constituent known for his bizarre behavior. It appears that Jared Lee Loughner had an obsession with the District eight congresswoman.

There’s been so much talk about what might have triggered his violent behavior. Some pointed to the extreme violence inciting rhetoric coming from the right, and in particular from leading voices for the social conservative movement such as Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck. Others claimed he was a ticking time bomb and that red flags were ignored. In any event, on that tragic day in January, Loughner not only shot a Democratic leader and life long Tucsonan, he extinguished the lives of six people including a Federal judge and a nine year old child.

As Gabby recovers at a remarkable speed, Republicans prepare to challenge her for district eight’s congressional seat, while Democrats scramble to examine their shallow bench.

As we watched pictures released of Gabrielle Giffords today, we observed her wonderful smile and the sparkle in her eyes. Her recovery seems absolutely miraculous. However, we know what the Republicans are thinking.

The country is watching attentively, many of us continue to pray for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ full recovery. In any event, politics aside, Gabby’s return to Washington as Tucson’s district eight representative would be best for Tucsonans. This would allow at least partial restoration of what was in place before that tragic day on January 8, 2011. You know, the day the entire country came to a grinding halt after a mad man followed through on his diabolical plan, incited or not, by the right.

Refresh my memory, Carlos—what rhetoric of Sarah Palin incited extreme violence?

    • leftfield

Maybe it was something you said.

      • Don

No, I think it was the victimhood and spinelessness that liberalism breeds that motivated “sac.”  Is it REALLY this easy to motivate liberals to violence?

        • leftfield

Is it REALLY this easy to motivate liberals to violence?

The Democrats have always needed a little push to engage in large-scale violence, but in the end they are easily persuaded.

          • WHATABAGGER

Well, that’s true…Look how “easily persuaded” those kids are marching around the perimeter of the school grounds, or TUSD headquarters, just for a couple extra credits.

The conservative movement always, always blamed for inciting violence…But you notice it is ONLY the left which have acted?

  • stoneave

Opportunistic insincere tripe. That’s how this comes across. What a classless, foolish post.

Since you’re desperately trying to sqeeze even more blood from that turnip…..not only has the rhetoric from the far left wing been more vitriolic and hateful, it is much more in alignment with Loughner’s vocabulary and twisted perspective of the world.

  • Les

Hi, Don – I’m not Carlos, but I can certainly refresh your memory regarding the extremist rhetoric from Palin: remember how she (or rather, her PAC – of which I would think a responsible politician would concur some…responsibility?)  put Giffords on a “target list” of lawmakers Palin wanted to see unseated in the midterm elections.
In March, Palin released a map featuring 20 House Democrats that used crosshairs images to show their districts. (You can see it here.) Critics suggested at the time that she was inciting violence by using the crosshairs imagery and for later writing on Twitter to her supporters, “‘Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!’”
So – a target from Palin over Giffords; “RELOAD” — doesn’t exactly sound like passive, calm political disagreement to me – but rather, terribly stupid, ill-conceived and INCITEFUL rhetorical hatespeak.
But of course: you may differ with my conclusion, which certainly wouldn’t surprise me..

    • WHATABAGGER

Yet it is only the members of the LEFT wing who actually take violent action.

    • stevie

“But of course: you may differ with my conclusion, which certainly wouldn’t surprise me.”

Yep, you’re wrong. Nobody here has forgotten the stupid “target list” controversy. It was a coincidence that may have been awkward for Palin, but it had nothing to do with the shooting.

  • Greedy Old Pigs

The Republican talking-head Palin had posted in March, 2010 a map of the United States with gunsite crosshares over districts she wanted people to target on her website Sarahpac.com titled: “20 House Democrats from districts we carried in 2008 voted for the health care bill…IT’S TIME TO TAKE A STAND.”
Gabrielle Giffords’s district was one of those areas targeted on the map.
Like an Alaskan cowgirl, the same day she used the language “bulls-eye” and “reloading” when writing on her websites in reference to her map.

    • Don

So, Greedy Old Pigs, you fault Palin for NOT realizing that liberals can’t stand seeing a drawing of a gunsight?  In her defense, I doubt she realized how weak-willed liberals are nowadays.  Rest assured…we all know now.

      • stoneave

I think GOP is saying that he thinks the hip-hop group The Coup is responsible for motivating Al Qaeda to attack the WTC. I mean, who could see that album cover of theirs and not come to the same conclusion?

That would be consistent with his logic.

    • stoneave

Greedy Old Pigs: Um, so what?

Wait a minute, were you on the PMRC?

  • Greedy Old Pigs

    Republicans are America’s cancer.

    • stoneave

People like you used to bug me. Then I realized we need people like you to balance out the wackos on the fringe right. People on the fringe right used to bug me, then I realized we need them to balance out nut jobs like you. If only we could get rid of both of you, then we wouldn’t need either of you. Such a utopia will never exist, but it’s nice to dream about.

  • Kelly

Yea, what Don said. Nice left wing article. They soooo much want to pin this lunatics actions on Conservatives, BUT THEY CANT

  • Laurence Cripe

Enough already – “diabolical plan, incited or not, by the right”.  Get used to two things, Carlos - dumb-ass acted alone to little warped voices in his diseased little mind and Gabrielle Giffords, God Bless her heart, will possess all of the Congressional grace and social elegance of an eggplant - end of reel.

  • usmctrucker

This is whole thing has gone beyond classless.  The Congresswoman has survived a wound that should have killed her and all these fanatics can think of is the next election.  At least the left only gave us one afternoon with Wellstone; not a year or more of melodramatic hand-wringing, complete with an Obama pep rally.  Let her retire in peace and find your next candidate elsewhere.  Allow her some dignity.  Some people act like they won’t take ”No” for an answer until they actually see her soil a diaper in public.  Ghouls!

  • leftfield

Methinks the right doth protest too much…

Whether or not Mr. Loughner was incited by rhetoric we may never know.  The right wing’s fascination with guns, uniforms, militarism, symbols of authority and violence are, however, very well known.

    • O-dog

“The right wing’s fascination with guns, uniforms, militarism, symbols of authority and violence are, however, very well known.”

      As is the radical left’s.

Will Gabby return to Congress as either a Representative or a Senator (winning Kyl’s seat)? This was a hot topic of conversation poolside last night at our weekly BBQ. I’ve lived in Gabby’s district since she was in the Arizona Legislature. I’ve contributed to her campaign (even though I am far left of her), walked the neighborhoods for her, and called her office about dozens of issues. Before the shooting, she was an intelligent, fair-minded, middle-of-the-road Democrat; even though I didn’t always agree with her, I felt that she had her constituents best interest at heart. A few years back at Drinking Liberally, I witnessed her take one tough question after another from a crowd of about 50 liberals who weren’t happy with her Blue Dog status. She performed brilliantly, answered every question, and never lost her cool. That is a high-functioning, intelligent person.

I’m willing to give her more time to recover– after all Senators Kennedy and Byrd were out of commission in the Senate for months before they passed and others have battled cancer for months and were allowed to recover and return. (Gosh, what kind of sick leave benefits do they have? I digress.) BUT I believe that if her speech and mental functioning are not to the level of being able to debate in Congress by January 8, 2012 (one year after the shooting), she should think of her constituents and step aside so another Democrat can run. Waiting until May 2012 to decide– as an aide suggested earlier last week– is not fair to the residents of District 8. After all, she could always run for something else in the future, and sometimes former politicians do more good out of office– like Al Gore and Jimmy Carter.
