Learn why and how creativity is developed in a FREE lecture by Jane Buckman, artist and teacher at Green Fields Country Day School February 17.

Buckman developed her own creative process studying art at Pennsylvania State University and independently while living in a secluded log cabin in the mountains. There she established her respect for the environment and an understanding of the importance of reflection.

Jane Buckman’s paintings are in private and corporate collections and have been exhibited in numerous galleries. She illustrated the children’s book “Elena and the Coin,” published by Desert Archeology. Her free public lecture is part of the school’s 2010 “Teachers on Teaching” series. Green Fields is Southern Arizona’s oldest independent college prep school.

Buckman’s topic was inspired in part by the innovative and creative minds of her students. She has taught many Green Fields students who start their art in the fourth grade and continue on through high school graduation. Watching a student’s unique talent emerge is a process that continues to amaze her.

The teacher and her students have received many awards over the years including the RISD Annual Art Award, Kodak Medallion Award, Scholastic Arts Program Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of Arizona Alumni Association.

“Ours is a school that provides the encouragement necessary for children to build on their instinct to create, while also developing their technical skills,” Buckman said. The school’s Visual Arts Center is housed in a geodesic dome built by students in the 1970s.

Green Fields is a college preparatory, co-educational, independent K-12 day school specializing in preparing students for the rigors of institutions like Princeton, Harvard and the California Institute of Technology. Green Fields is committed to the success and well being of each child, nurturing through individual attention, small class size and exceptional teachers.

The Free lecture will be held at Green Fields Country Day School located in northwest Tucson at 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra, near Orange Grove Rd. The presentation will be in the Center for Performing Arts at 7:00 PM.
