Fairies at Valley of the Moon

On Saturday June 5, the public is invited to explore Tucson’s famous Valley of the Moon and enjoy a movie under the stars.  Explore a world of magic and be dazzled by the Fairy Lights of this historic fantasyland. Stroll through the evening sparkle as you explore winding paths, magic statues and enchanted gardens.

The whole family is invited for a night of adventure, imagination and entertainment in an enchanting environment, when the Valley of the Moon shows the major motion picture: LABYRINTH. Gates open at 6:30PM. Admission is free. At 7:30 they will have a Do It Yourself (DIY) costume contest, with prizes handed out for best fairy, best recycle project, and most creative. No store-bought costumes will be considered for the contest, but are always welcome at the Moon! Movie starts at 7:35.

Labyrinth centers upon teenage Sarah (Connelly), who lives in a fantasy world of myth and magic, evil spells, and wondrous enchantment. She is baby-sitting her little brother when she cavalierly wishes that goblins would take him away. She gets her wish, and a coterie of goblins abducts him. She then encounters Jareth (David Bowie), the ruler of a mystical world one step removed from reality. He tells Sarah that the only way to get her brother back is to find her way through a M.C. Escher-like labyrinth and find the castle at the center. As she makes her way through the maze, she faces a number of horrific challenges (like the Bog of Eternal Stench) before she finds her way to the gravity-defying castle, where her brother is being held by the evil goblins.

Then on Sunday, June 5^th, the public is invited back to experience ELQUEST on the Moon, a magical evening with two Elves, Wendy and Richard Pini.  Bring the whole family for a night of adventure and imagination under the stars, when Valley of the Moon welcomes the creators of ElfQuest and Warp Graphics, Sunday June 5th from 6PM till 8PM. Admission is Free.

This is a great opportunity to meet the founders of WARP Graphics, whose premiere graphic novel, ElfQuest, is about to become a major motion picture. (And it is the day after Wendy’s Birthday so go celebrate with them.)

Elfquest was one of the first independently published American comic series. It premiered in February 1978, the work of artist/writer Wendy Pini and her husband, Richard. Since its release, it has continued to this day, evolving through many sequels and formats, retaining an artistic and thematic unity rare in the world of comic literature. In its heyday, at a time when other independent comics were selling a few hundred or a few thousand copies, each Elfquest issue sold 100,000 copies worldwide, and was the most popular comic among female readers in the United States.

Since 1992, when the Pini’s finally allowed other artists and writers to produce Elfquest stories, the epic has expanded into a multi-faceted universe of characters and tales. The purpose of this text is to critically examine the saga, to explore its contribution to popular culture, and to attempt to unravel the themes within it that make it of greater literary value than has been hitherto acknowledged.

Valley of the Moon is a non-profit historic fantasy fairyland garden park dedicated to the idea that Kindness to All is the Golden Key to Happiness. Built by George Legler in the 1920′s for spiritual relaxation, it continues as an all volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the historic sculptures, and a philosophy that Happiness is Given and Not Sold.
