This coming Saturday January 29 a special benefit titled “Piece of Peace for Tucson” has been prepared by Bohemia and Borealis Arts with help from the Pop-Cycle Shop for a special day to honor the victims and celebrate the survivors of the terrible events of January 8. This Saturday from 3-8pm both galleries will simultaneously hold a silent auction and proceeds from this art auction will benefit the Tucson Tragedy Victims Fund, The Gabe Zimmerman Memorial Fund and The Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Fund (through the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona).

Remembrances by Robin Westenhiser

Bohemia will also have a shrine for your offerings about the tragedy…be it messages, creations, thoughts…anything you might need to leave behind. Borealis Arts will have an interactive canvas for people to express themselves. The canvas will be available for purchase at the end of the evening. Both locations will have message boxes for Congresswoman Giffords and message books for the victim’s families.

Over 40 local artists have donated pieces with a peace theme to be auctioned and they will also have special encouragement bracelets for sale to benefit the groups, as well. Advocates from Homicide Survivors will be available to listen and help and there will be live music to complete the evening. You will truly see and hear “art from the artist’s hearts” by attending the Piece of Peace for Tucson benefit. Tucson musicians are lending their support to this event. Eleven groups and solo artists will perform from 4 until 7 at Bohemia.

Tucson is an art-creating and art-loving community. There are many individuals at the epicenter of the tragedy that occurred on Jan. 8. The galleries and artists wish to show love and support to those whom have suffered most, while providing a venue for Tucson’s art community to express their grief, love, and desire for peace.

Let This Be A Bridge by Carolyn Anne Anderson

The painting above is by Carolyn Anne Anderson and this is what she wrote to me about her art offering. It is definitely art from her heart.

“So much has been written about the events of January 8th as I attempt for the first time to personally put some words together about it- it seems so much has already been said- Therefore, it might be easier to let the artwork speak for me. That night, especially as a mom with young children, I was struck with a flood of emotions. As a mentor once told me, “when you don’t know what to do, make art”. So I began pushing paint around as my own way to process and try and make sense of things. This painting began as my own way of sorting things out in the days immediately following. I have donated the original painting “Let This Be A Bridge” to the “Piece of Peace for Tucson” Event and 100% of money raised by it will go directly to the Christina Taylor-Green memorial fund.”

Preview pictures of the silent auction items are continually being posted on their facebook event page.

We love our city, and encourage you to come mourn, heal, and move forward with us on January 29.
