French-born MARC ANTOINE has been hailed by fans around the globe as one of the greatest jazz fusion guitarists on the planet. Performing with the likes of Basia, Sting, Dave Koz, Chris Botti, Jeff Lorber, Larry Carlton and others, his career boasts numerous awards and #1 hits on the R&R contemporary jazz charts. In a rare U. S. appearance he will be joined by the great SHAHNAS brothers in Tucson this coming Saturday.

Despite almost losing the use of his left hand, Antoine makes the most difficult of flamenco, classical and jazz licks sound easy. His intense performances are described as “melodic thunder” transporting listeners to extraordinary and exotic places. Fans can expect to be taken to the edge.

Antoine’s career was sidelined in the summer of 1981 when the family dog jumped up to greet him causing him to fall through a glass door. The shattered glass severed nerves and tendons cutting his left wrist to the bone. After going through extensive surgery and the surgeon telling him that he may never play again, he went through three years of rigorous rehabilitation. When he thought he was ready he went back to the surgeon and played his guitar for him, overwhelming the doctor. Antoine states: “The experience made me a better player as I learned the difference from having technical skills and playing from the soul.”

Guitarists Thano & Demitri Sahnas

Joining Antoine is the dynamic duo collectively known as SAHNAS (also known as two-fifths of the jazz fusion band called TURNING POINT). Celebrating the release of their newest CD “Under the Covers Volume II” brothers Thano and Demitri Sahnas will debut a collection of timeless, melodic songs from the classic rock era along with a special tribute to some of the greatest Pop Classics ever written — all craftily arranged for Spanish Guitar with the signature Sahnas flair. The Guitar Brothers have enthralled thousands with their unique hybrid sound and entertaining, charismatic personalities.

The grand finale of the evening will culminate in an improvisational, magical jam by these three guitar wizards. Fans will watch these virtuosos spur one another on to heights of musical greatness. Marc’s ability to overcome the odds of never playing guitar makes his appearance all the more inspiring.

Antoine’s drive and discipline propelled him to become an extraordinary presence on the contemporary jazz scene resulting in a successful solo career, garnering numerous awards in the U.S. and Canada. Marc is nominated for the American Smooth Jazz Awards INTERNATIONAL ARTIST OF THE YEAR. For Tucsonans this will be a rare opportunity to see a U. S. performance of this talented musician.

The popular Ryanhood will be performing at the Rialto Theater this Friday April 9 to benefit the extraordinary student achievement program OMA. (Opening Minds through the Arts) The OMA program is a revolutionary teaching program that has benefited K-8 classes in the Tucson area since 2000.

The schools taught by the OMA method have continually increased grade scores over traditional methods. The OMA designed curriculum uses the arts integrated in different art forms-music, dance, visual arts and theater arts to teach the academic standards of math, science, reading, writing and social studies.

The results documented by an independent research firm determined that the OMA program raises test scores for EVERY child regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic background. This program has proven to increase attendance and reduce discipline problems. It has been prescribed as a solution for under-performing schools.

For more information: http://www.omafoundation.org or to register: http://www.omanetwork.org

Ryan Green and Cameron Hood

Ryanhood has recently toured an OMA school and is forging a working partnership with them. This relationship has resulted in collaboration for this concert benefit.

On the streets of Boston – in between classes at Berklee College of Music – Ryan Green found his calling with childhood friend Cameron Hood. While busking with their acoustic guitars, the two were snatched up by Clear Channel’s Tea Party Concerts booking agency. Since then, the two, under the name Ryanhood, have toured the country opening up for artists such as Jason Mraz, Kelly Clarkson, Lifehouse, Matt Nathanson, Mat Kearney, and the Plain White T’s.

One part comedic exchange and one part music ensemble, Ryanhood has built a reputation around the country as one of the most entertaining and engaging acoustic duos today, performing 135 dates in 2008 alone. Their airtight vocal harmonies, along with Ryan’s rapidly precise guitar riffs and Cameron’s soulfully rich lead vocals, create the pleasantly distinguishable “Ryanhood” sound.

The song “Stopless,” off of their new album, features their signature duo vocal style: echoing each other throughout the verse then falling effortlessly into perfect parallel harmony over the chorus. Shimmering acoustic guitar hooks by Ryan and a steady rhythmic foundation set by Cameron supports this playful back-and-forth.

Their new album, The World Awaits, produced by Grammy winner Ross Hogarth (Melissa Etheridge, Ziggy Marley), features the same feel-good breakdowns and radio-ready hooks that fans have loved about Ryanhood for years.

Tickets for the show at the Historic Rialto Theater: $10 General Admission (standing only) & Balcony Seating $15.

A PIPE ORGAN is one of the greatest musical instruments ever created. One pipe organ can equal the volume of a symphony orchestra. It is also the most complicated of all instruments. The average organ has more than 2000 pipes and you might play more than 100 of them at once in a large chord. Tucson piano students now have an opportunity to discover the power of their own musical talent in a workshop playing a pipe organ, sponsored by the Southern Arizona Chapter, American Guild of Organists. < http://www.agosaz.com >

One of the organizers of the event, Fern Heib, states “unlike instruments like trombones or violins or even pianos, which can be identical to each other, each pipe organ is unique, and can change tone color during the performance of a single piece. The organ is thousands of years old, but still modern today. We want students to have the opportunity to experience the power and complexity of performing on an ancient and modern instrument.”

Keyboard of St. Mark's Pipe Organ

The pipe organ is one of the oldest instruments used in European classical music and the earliest was built in Ancient Greece in the third century B.C. It is a musical instrument producing sound by driving pressurized air through pipes selected via a keyboard. Each pipe produces a single pitch, and the pipes are provided in sets and each of which has a common sound quality and loudness throughout the keyboard compass.

Most organs have multiple ranks of pipes of differing timbre, pitch and loudness. A pipe organ may have one or several keyboards played by hands and a pedal board played by the feet each having their own group of stops. A detailed history and the functions of the different parts of the pipe organ can be found at:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipe organ

To experience the magnificence of this instrument and the sound capability, I suggest you visit the two sites below. (Many more on YouTube) The first is a YouTube video showing the world’s largest pipe organ located in Macy’s Department Store in Philadelphia. The size of this organ will amaze you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIv4NtUpPhs&feature=channel

This second link will enable you to hear the phenomenal sound that a pipe organ is capable of creating. This is the NUTCRACKER Suite played by Frederick Hohman on his pipe organ. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKDJ6Z_stvg

Any one viewing these two videos will easily understand WHY the opportunity to learn to play one of these master instruments is such a great opportunity for a young pianist. The best Free value they may ever receive.

Students will get to perform their favorite piano works through the thrilling depth and amplification of a pipe organ on Saturday, February 27 at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church. 3809 E. 3rd Street-Tucson, AZ.

To register for the FREE workshop, or for more information contact:
 Fern Hieb, CAGO
2515 E. 7th – Tucson, AZ 85716 (
barryfern@cox.net ) Phone: 321-4080

A new show opens at one of Tucson’s favorite art shops BOHEMIA. The new original paintings by Liz Vaughn (http://www.lizvaughn.com) will be featured in her Heart of Dangerous Obscurity opening reception Saturday, February 13th, 7:00-10 PM. Music will be provided by Hans Hutchison. The exhibition runs until March 17th. Address: 2920 E. Broadway,Tucson, AZ 85716 Phone: 520-882-o8oo. Website: http://bohemiatucson.com/

Liz Vaughn uses dramatic use of color and purposefully disregards perspectives on her canvasses. She starts by redefining the image with use of elongation and free form lines. Her brilliant color fields come into play next, separating the figure from worldliness, floating in a space of light and timelessness. Her images often reflect the nuances of daily life and humor that catch us unaware. Early 20th Century artists such as Egon Schiele, Amedeo Modigliani and Gustaf Klimt have influenced her figure studies.

My favorite Jazz Vocalist in the world, Diane Schuur, is performing a Valentine’s Day performance this Saturday with the Jeff Daniel Band, February 13 at the Westin La Paloma Resort beginning at 7:30 PM.

Multi-talented pianist, keyboardist, composer, producer, bandleader and vocalist J D Daniel has been blessed with a rich and colorful life in music. Raised in Seattle he was classically trained, starting at the early age of six. At 19 he began leading his own popular group in Tucson, which featured winner bassist Brian Bromberg and leading vocalist Diane Schuur. Following years touring the globe with dozens of well-known artists, Daniel returns to Tucson in a much-anticipated appearance with longtime friends to celebrate the release of his latest CD project.

The All-Star lineup of veteran musical talents accompanying Schuur and Daniel are: Craig Faltin (bass), Fred Hayes (drums), Howard Wooten (guitar) and Gary Love (saxophones). Daniel and company will also debut his red-hot new contemporary jazz CD – “Back To The Groove,” which features David Sanborn, Brandon Fields and more along with performing vintage crowd favorites.

Vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. Acclaimed worldwide for her vocal versatility and incredible 3½ octave range, Schuur was “discovered” by Dizzy Gillespie, who brought her on stage at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival. A longtime disciple of Dinah Washington and other legendary jazz singers of the ‘40s and ‘50s, Schuur has built a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents’ generation, but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and ‘60s.

In a recording career that spans nearly three decades – and includes two Grammy Awards and three Grammy nominations – Schuur’s music has explored nearly every corner of the 20th century American musical landscape. Blinded at birth due to a hospital accident, Schuur, nicknamed “Deedles,” has headlined many of the world’s most prestigious music venues, including Carnegie Hall and The White House and has toured the world performing with such greats as Stan Getz, B. B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones

VALENTINE’S HOMECOMING CONCERT TO BE BROADCAST WORLD WIDE!

The highly anticipated Tucson performance by award winning jazz vocalist Diane Schuur and the Jeff Daniel band will be heard live around the globe with Westin La Paloma Resort serving as command central for the exciting remote broadcast. The special broadcast will be heard on the world wide web via Internet jazz radio station AZJAZZ.NET. “If you have friends or family in other parts of the country, now they can join you on Valentine’s weekend by logging on to www.azjazz.net at 6:30 PM local time (8:30 PM Eastern and 5:30 PM Pacific Time), says Michael Bradford host of the Mike B show heard weekday afternoons on www.azjazz.net ;The station is dedicated to all things jazz ranging from contemporary to classics and will include blues, soft rock and smooth jazz music.

OMA (Opening Minds through the Arts Foundation) is presenting its OMA Artist Series this Sunday (January 24) with performances by the artists working with children in their OMA Program schools. The school program used by numerous schools in the Tucson area created by the OMA Foundation is a K-8 student achievement program started in the year 2000. It uses arts integration in the different art forms—music, dance, visual arts, & theater arts to teach the academic standards in math, science, reading, writing and social studies and has had astounding positive results in improved scholastic achievements.

Results documented by an independent research firm determined that the OMA Program raises test scores for EVERY child regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic background. This program has proven to increase school attendance and reduce discipline problems. It has been prescribed as a solution for underperforming schools.

If any of you know one or more of our local, state or national politicians PLEASE tell them about this OMA program and its success. As many are aware, it has already been discussed to possibly eliminate art, music and physical education school programs due to budget cuts here in Arizona. This program can prove this would be a major mistake in our children’s education. More information can be found at http://www.omafoundation.org.

The event put on by OMA this coming Sunday will feature the professional artists that teach the OMA program. They will perform a mix of music, dance, mime and visual.

Here are a few performers’ photos and highlights of what you will see and hear at the performance:

*Soprano April Amante accompanied by pianist Dylan Marney will perform Puccini’s Quando m’en vo and Steal Me, Sweet Thief by Gian Carlo Menotti.

*OMA dance artist Bethany Lynch and Arts Integration Specialist Sara Anderson Stewart perform the premier of Essence, choreographed by Wendy Joy Koltnow to the music of Astor Piazolla and Gary Burton.
