New Gallery Opening in Historic Arts Warehouse District Saturday December 4!

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Smoking Man by Beth Hynes

On Saturday December 4, the new fine art gallery named Wanderlust Gallery will open its doors to the public. They are participating in the 1st Saturday art walk and the gallery is located in the historic building on 6th & 6th.  The exhibition featured is called The Nature of Man. A quote by Peter Landry about the show is: “Man is not of divine origins; nor is he headed that way, he is not perfect nor is he perfectible. He is what he is; by nature formed.”

Zero Grams Trans Fat by S. Jordan Palmer

This unique exhibition is a student exhibition from artists from University of Arizona, Pima College, and Northern Arizona University. Three students Jacob Biggerstaff, Carly O’Neill and Josh Schffer curated it. There are 18 artists in the presentation.  The art students focused primarily on the darker side of human existence, exemplifying issues of struggle and suffering, violence and vices, addiction and aggression.  This is the type of art that will make you think and reflect. All the art in my opinion is very professional and priced to sell.

This very unique new gallery is just starting up and will be progressing in the near future with professional lighting and more variety. The gallery owners Alisa Rabinovich and Joseph Zapf-Kent are hoping to offer art of various styles and price ranges.

Alisa has a very interesting background. She is originally from Uzbekistan, formerly a part of the Soviet Union. She moved to the USA on a refugee program in 1990. She has studied art from a very early age and for the past four years prior to moving to Tucson was a fashion buyer and visual merchandiser. Her artistic ability makes her capable of working in all mediums and should be very successful as a gallery owner. Here education in the arts is international in studies and experience.

Her partner Joseph is a lifetime resident of Arizona and his parents have been artists making pottery for many years. <http://www.manapottery.com> Joseph, like Alisha, have been stricken what we travelers call the Wanderlust, hence the name of their gallery. He moved back to Tucson recently from Sedona where he worked for a jewelry company, Starborn Creations.

Both of the partners feel that “art is an adventure and should not be limited by the confines of labels and genres. Art is something to be shared and is a social medium and a pure form of communication.  It should be accessible to all and believe people should be able to walk into a gallery without feeling intimidated or judged for their lack of knowledge.” They want their gallery to be inviting to all and realize it is still evolving.  It will have portions resembling a boutique, a teaching space, a working space and a performance piece. It will be an enjoyable adventure for all art patrons to watch as it evolves.

Wanderlust is located at 439 N. 6th Ave. Its a few doors West of  the corner of Sixth and Sixth. 439 W. 6th Ave. 520-207-3346.

Original Art by Carloyn Leigh

This year 222 artists have joined together to celebrate the vibrancy of Pima County’s creative community and welcome you to share in the joy of this local treasure. The Open Studio Tour welcomes collectors, residents and tourists to visit artists working in virtually every medium in their creative spaces – from downtown barrios to foothills studios and open-air desert sanctuaries.

The Open Studio Tour artists are a diverse blend of culture and ages, prominent and emerging artists and young students of art working in a wide range of media –bookmakers, sculptors, photographers, ceramic artists, fiber artists, metal smiths, glass blowers and painters to name a few. The event is family-friendly, casual, full of fresh air, tasty treats, original work, and always the chance of seeing old friends also out and about and new techniques in art making.

Sponsored by TPAC, this free self-guided tour provides an opportunity to dialogue with artists about their philosophies, inspirations, and the nuts and bolts of making art.  Now you have the chance to find answers to questions that come to us when we see art hanging in museums or commercial galleries such as “What does it mean” or “How did she do that?”

This celebration began with a preview exhibition, a visual feast hosted by the Jewish Community Center at 3800 E. River Rd., on view from Oct. 28th through Nov. 11th. The exhibition concludes with a ‘meet-the-artist reception’ from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 11th.

The tour of studios takes place this weekend November, 13 & 14. Studios are open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This year the Tucson Mountain Artisans, a new group of diverse artists, will be part of this season’s tour. They offer a unique setting in the West Central Tucson Mountains. Visitors can explore their picturesque studios and experience first-hand the desert beauty that inspires their creativity in multiple dimensions and mediums. Light refreshments will be served at each studio. Watch for javelina, coyote or mule deer crossing your path on this scenic drive between studios.

The local Tucson non-profit Industria Studios is having a big fundraiser this Saturday titled: Hot Fun in the Summertime! There will be art auctions, bronze pouring demonstrations, blacksmithing , life body castings, music, and theatrical performances.

Industria Studios Inc. was founded in 2003 by local artists to provide a non-competitive educational and working studio. Six years later they became a non)profit 501c3 corporation with a 5000 square foot studio loaded with tools, machinery for sculptural fabrication, ceramics foundry, and a forge for bronze casting.  In 2009 Industria established Tucson’s first sculptors guild named Arizona Sculpture Society.

Industria Studio’s main mission is to enhance the educational experience for the arts community and to increase involvement and participation of the fine arts. It is dedicated to increasing the awareness, activities, and appreciation for fine arts among the community
