A multi-talented visionary artist is the best way to describe Quetzally Hernandez Coronado. She experiences a continuous channel of creation flowing through her in her visual art and in her writings. The finished work opens the door to the viewer into her visions. Her talent speaks for itself.

Quetzally’s passion for art drew her to experience the discipline of painting, sculpting and engraving at a young age. She is driven by what she feels in her heart as to the direction to take and the creative vision she needs to release to the world. Everyday she looks at life as a new adventure to explore and continues her passion “ always searching for a place to reflect her soul.”

She told me that she never sees herself as anything but a continuous channel of creation and by viewing the multiple talents she demonstrates this becomes obvious. If you look closely at all her work you as a viewer can feel this passion. She uses various mediums in her paintings to accomplish her landscapes, realism, expressionism, figurative subjects and in her etchings & engravings, fashion designs and sculpture.

Many of her creations are paintings of dreams she has experienced and then put on canvas. If you look closely at several of her Tiger paintings you will notice they have blue eyes and have an almost human feeling reflecting the emotions from her visual dreams. Often the background in her animal paintings illustrates the dreamlike perception she experienced.

Quetzally Hernandez Coronado has received numerous awards for both her paintings and her writing. Her paintings, writings and fashion designs have collectors throughout the world. She mainly sells her paintings and engravings through her own studio and the majority of them have buyers even before they are completed. She exhibits both in the United States, Mexico, Paris and Spain.

As a writer the more I explore the artists of Tucson, I realize the immense talent we have among us. If you have read a number of my articles you will find this obvious by just seeing their work. I hope some day our local leaders realize the tremendous asset they have available to them and the drawing power this great art can be for the quality of life in Tucson and for attracting visitors to our great city. It is an existing asset that only needs commitment and acknowledgment from them. With the proper exposure, I feel strongly Tucson could become a Mecca for art of all types. The talent is here and just needs help letting the world know it.

Lauren Raine is one of Tucson’s true visionary artists. Her art appears to transcend our physical world and portray a wider vision of awareness including spiritual or mystical themes. I compare her art to other visionaries like Hieronymous Bosch, William Blake, Emil Bisttram and Gustave Moreau. Whereas, she has not achieved their level of recognition as yet she definitely will in the future.

Raine’s talents are multiple. She is a classically trained painter, mixed media sculptor, choreographer, theatrical mask maker, dancer, author and teacher. There appears to be an underlying story in all of her art that challenges the viewers. She holds a BFA from the University of California at Berkeley and a MFA from the University of Arizona. She has also attended the Otis Art Institute and the New England Institute for art therapy. She studied mask making under master mask maker Ida Bagus Anom in Bali, Indonesia. Her masks are mostly painted leather.

In 1999 she created “Masks of the Goddess,” homage to the divine feminine spirit. This choreographed production traveled across the U. S. for exhibits, rituals and community performances. In 2006 her Goddess mask collection was used for the 20^th Annual Spiral Dance at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, CA and received front-page recognition in the San Francisco Chronicle. She has created masks for numerous other productions throughout the country and received numerous awards and fellowships.

Before the demise of the former Muse Art Center at 6^th St. and 5^th Ave., I attended a performance of Masks of the Goddess. The overflowing audience appeared overwhelmed by the originality of the production and touched by the unique music and dance of the players. Unfortunately, this once thriving art community is now a hole in the ground left us by some greedy developers. In 2007, she auctioned off her Goddess Mask collection and began a new quest about the mythical Spider Woman. The creator and weaver of life and sacred guardian for many Native American cultures. Later this month she will be leaving for a resident artist fellowship at the Henry Luce Center at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D. C. for several months before returning to Tucson.
