Jesse Kelly: Gabby “a hero of nothing” (UPDATE x2)

by on Jun. 04, 2012, under Pol. & Govt.

UPDATE: From some of the comments some thought I was implying that Jesse Kelly made the comment about Gabby after the January 8 2011 shooting. I don’t feel that I was. But to make it clear to everyone, the video is clearly labeled “2010″, he apparently made the comment during the 2010 Congressional campaign, and the voiceover also clearly says “when Kelly said 2 years ago . ..” . Perhaps Kelly doesn’t think anything he said just 2 years ago is relevant, but we do.

UPDATE: 2 As requested by some commenters I’ve located the entire 4 1/2 minute speech by Kelly, made at a TTP Tea Party Rally on August 28, 2010. YouTube video posted at end of the blog.

I make no bones about my strong dislike for Jesse Kelly. Frankly, he offends me – I think he is the biggest phony I’ve seen in a long time.  When he started rising in Republican ranks in 2010 it was clear to me he didn’t have a clue what he was talking about, he was just repeating catch phrases he’d read on Tea Party and far right websites - “The corporate tax rate should be zero!” “We need to reduce and eliminate minimum wage!” “Social Security is the biggest Ponzi scheme in history!”. He’s even more offensive this time around – his handlers have obviously told him to just keep his mouth shut as much as possible, just smile alot, and let Grandpa do the talking.  He won’t answer any question he doesn’t like, such as when a KGUN9 reporter asked him about his endorsement by the controversial group ALIPAC Kelly just repeated over and over “Our campaign is going to stay focused on lower gas prices using American energy, lower taxes, and creating jobs”.  And even among his supporters I don’t recall any of them claiming Jesse is any kind of mental giant. But even I didn’t think he was this dumb – an ad by the House Majority PAC has Jesse Kelly on video telling supporters what he really thinks about Gabrielle Giffords during the 2010 campaign -

“And now she stands there with that smile and pretends to be some type of hometown hero. “She’s a hero of nothing!”

No, Jesse, as usual you have it ass backwards – while Gabby usually has a smile on her face she’s never ever acted like she was some kind of hero. She wasn’t acting like a hero during the 2010 campaign – she acted like someone in a tough reelection campaign who knew she had made some tough decisions that she knew would be unpopular with some of her constituents. And she hasn’t acted like a hero since that terrible day January 8 2011.  She’s acted like she was one of the 19 victims of a deranged shooter, grateful to be alive, grateful for the love and support of her family, and grateful for the admiration and support of southern Arizonans. Hometown heroes are people like Medal of Honor recipient Spcialist Ross Andrew McGinnis, who was killed at age 19 in December 2006. While on a combat patrol in Baghdad an enemy fighter on a nearby rooftop threw a grenade into his Humvee and Ross covered it with his body to protect his fellow soldiers in the vehicle. His action saved the lives of four others. President George W Bush presented Ross’s parents with his Medal of Honor in a ceremony in June 2008. His hometown of Harrisburg Pennsylvania honored him with his parents as Grand Marshalls of the St. Patrick’s Day parade this year.

No Jesse, Gabby isn’t some kind of hometown hero, and has never acted like one. She’s just someone that we admire and look up to for inspiration as we face the challenges of every day life, knowing the challenges she faces as she struggles to walk and speak, to regain her life. Kelly’s words not only disrespect Gabby, they disrespect every true hometown hero. Do you really want Jesse Kelly representing you?

P.S. – Gabby will be in town this weekend for a Get Out the Vote Rally and Concert for Ron Barber this Saturday, June 9, 5-8PM at the Rialto Theater, featuring Calexico.

Here is the YouTube video of the entire speech by Kelly at a TTP Rally Aug. 28, 2010. He spends the first few minutes attacking Gabby, and then launches into typical Tea Party rallying cries like “we’re going to take our country back!”.

“She spent 4 years in Washington DC bankrupting the next four generations and pretends to be a patriot now? No!”

“Gabrielle Giffords is big spending San Franciso liberal, that’s what Gabrielle Giffords is.”

“And she has the gall to talk about us being extreme?”

“She has brought bankruptcy to this nation and we’re going to bring unemployment to her.”

“And now she stands there with that smile and pretends to be some type of hometown hero. “She’s a hero of nothing!”

One thing is clear:  Kelly’s hateful radio ads were still running on local radio stations two months after he’d lost the election and two days before the assassination attempt on Giffords.  I’m among a throng of folks who noted and reported this fact.  Kelly needs to move back home to Texas where he really lives and stay there.

  • tiponeill

Kelly doesn’t think that anything he said in the last campaign should be brought up or mentioned.
And if anyone does he will call them a liar.
The tactic seems to be working.

Just running a bit scared?  It would seem to be in the best interests of PTSD Barber that you would get the facts before spewing forth such venom.  Makes Gabby look bad, Barber look bad, this blog site look bad, and you look reprehensible.

    • tunkashila

So which facts did they get wrong?  Try listing and correcting them next time.  And how is using a politician’s own, in-context, quotes by any stretch of the imagination “spewing venom”?  Do you seriously expect anybody to buy that crap?  It’s quite obvious to even the casual reader who’s running scared, Jon.

No, Gabby is not a hometown hero.  She is a NATIONAL hero.

  • fortbuckley

David, I assure you the Kelly campaign could care less about your opinion of him. If Jesse cured cancer tomorrow, you’d probably condemn him for putting gravediggers out of work the day after tomorrow.

No, that’s not a flattering video of Jesse, I’ll give you that.  Of course, I’d like to know what the whole context of his speech was, not just the snip the Democrats cut out.

Perhaps Jesse was remembering how Democrats and liberals (Sherrif Dupnik, David Fitzsimmons, etc…) seized on the tragedy of January 8 2009 to slander the Tea Party and conservatives.  Debbie Wasserman Schulz, a Giffords ally, continues to slander the Tea Party to this day.  (If memory serves, many Democrats used the tragedy in fundraising appeals).

When you hear good people being wrongly smeared, over and over again, it can cause you to lose your temper…

Gabrielle Giffords deserves all the credit and honor that we give to someone who’s taken a bullet for their country.  (Frank Antenori’s words, not mine).  Here are my thoughts—Gabrielle Giffords is a Wounded Warrior.  She was targeted for attack because she was serving her country.  Hence, IMO, she’s a Wounded Warrior.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Jesse was thinking of SOME (NOT ALL) of the people around Gabrielle Giffords, who used the tragedy as a stick with which to pound their political opponents.

Your wish is my command. Now updated with a 2nd update with video of the entire 4 1/2 minute speech by Kelly at a TTP Rally 8/28/2010. Jesse had some other choice words about Gabby.

  • rosemarienoa

It’s very obvious you strongly dislike Jesse Kelly but if you were a true journalist you would not let your own personal feelings get in your way when reporting the “news”. You are also a liar for saying such an outrageous thing about Jesse Kelly!!! Liberals lie just like muslims, to further their agenda!!! For Shame!!!!

    • BajaDemocrats

What “outrageous” things would that be? Any quote of Kelly is straight from his own mouth. I said that I THINK he is “a miserable excuse for a decent human being”, indicating that is my personal opinion. Trust me, that is no lie, I truly do think he is a miserable excuse for a decent human being. I’m entitled to my personal opinion, just the same as you are. But when I updated the blog I removed that comment to be less inflammatory.

      • fortbuckley

I have to speak up for David here.  It’s not fair to hold him to the same standards as a professional journalist.  David’s a partisan advocate, just as I am for the other side.  David’s biases are clear as day, as are mine.

    • tunkashila

Ma’am, you know as much about liberals and muslims as you do about particle physics; which is to say nothing.

  • Mark_B_Evans

Are you sure he said this after the shooting and not in 2010?

    • Mark_B_Evans

On second viewing, it’s labeled 2010. Misleading at best. Total BS at worst. Barber should disavow.

      • Fraser007

Good call. Truth…always the truth. Thanks for catching that. Guess the Dems were hoping for a “october Surprise”.

      • BajaDemocrats

The ad is from a super PAC, not the Barber campaign. I hadn’t seen the entire ad yet, just this segment. Yes, it is clearly labeled “2010″. I’m updating the blog to make it clear that even Jesse Kelly isn’t dumb & callous enough to say something like that in public, on video, after the shootings.

        • Fraser007

I saw that ad last night. Total bullsh**. And you were part of it. Did you get your marching orders from Barber or some worm back east.
I wasnt totally sure about Kelly, but I am now. I sent in my vote….. Slimy to the max.

          • BajaDemocrats

Yeah, God forbid we bring up anything he said in 2010, that was a whole 2 years ago! This is the new Jesse Kelly, the one who’s going to single handily bring back 99 cent a gallon gasoline!

No, I don’t take marching orders from anyone. As I made clear in the blog I especially dislike Jesse Kelly, he’s the biggest phony I’ve seen in a long time, and I’ve seen some doosies.

            • Fraser007

Don’t be naive. do you think we are stupid. We all saw what was attempted here. You seeing phonies has nothing to do with Kelly. We figured that out a long time ago. Dont attempt to distract the readers here. What it has to do is linking his statement with the shooting.
Voters will remember this. The PAC folks made a big mistake, and I think the attempt will cost Barber the election. Dumb move, big time. So enjoy your little moment here.

              • Fraser007

                typo: seeing…saying.

      • tiponeill

First candidate I’ve ever seen where directly quoting him or showing a recording of him was lying :)

    • BajaDemocrats

It’s not clear to me when he said that, I don’t know if it was before or after the shooting. In the blog I didn’t say when he he made the statement. And I don’t think it really matters, he made clear what he thinks of Gabby.

      • fortbuckley

No, David, you didn’t say when—but the source you linked certainly did.

  • Carolyn_Classen

Jesse Kelly spells his last name without the 2nd “e”, unlike James Kelley who is running for Pima County Supervisor District 2.

    • BajaDemocrats

Thanks so much, Carolyn. Yes, I caught it – something just didn’t look right.
