This past Monday the Los Angeles Dodgers narrowly defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-3 to win the National League Championship Series pennant, shutting the Braves out of post season play. We Americans must not take this outrage sitting down! Proud, hardworking American and Braves fan Paul Kaplan wrote Georgia Congressman Jack Kingston requesting his support in rectifying this gross injustice. You see, Congressman Kingston is a leader in the Republican House demand that the Affordable Care Act (ACA, ‘Obamacare’) be repealed, defunded, or at least delayed – or else the Government gets it. Mr. Kaplan was certain Rep. Kingston could understand his logic in applying the same reasoning to overturn this grave injustice in the world of baseball. Mr. Kaplan writes:
Dear Congressman Kingston:
“Thank you for your courageous stand against Obamacare and in support of the government shutdown. Your bold act of statesmanship has given me an idea that I hope you’ll agree to help with. Like you, I’m sure, I am profoundly disappointed that the Atlanta Braves lost the NLDS last night. And to the Dodgers – a bunch of California liberals!”
Nice opening, and I’m certain the last sentence resonates with the painful sorrow conservatives felt almost a year ago, when the guy who championed the ACA – President Obama – deafeated the guy who promised to repeal it – Mitt Romney – by 5 million votes. And, to rub salt in their wounds, Democratic Senators who supported the ACA defeated Republican candidates who promised to repeal it, as Democrats gained seats in the Senate. We won’t even mention that Democratic Congressmen and Congresswomen received well over one million more votes than Republican Congress critters. But this is a bridge to far – a bunch of wild eyed whiny liberal Marxists from Kenya, er, I mean California, stole the NLDS pennant from the pride of Red State Georgia???? This moral outrage must not go unchallenged!
Mr. Kaplan continues:
This outrage cannot be allowed to stand. But the system has failed us. We tried to resolve this issue through traditional means: In last night’s game alone, we must have sent batters to the plate at least 40 times. But just because we couldn’t score enough runs, the Dodgers refuse to relinquish the title — and worse, they won’t even discuss it….
LA’s stubborn refusal to even talk to us about reversing the results of this series is unsportsmanlike and unAmerican. But there is an answer: If the Dodgers won’t listen to the cries of average Americans like you and me, then Congress should outlaw Major League Baseball until the Dodgers cave….
Just because the Dodgers had more hits, scored more runs and won more games doesn’t make them right. You can help them see that. And if that means the country will be deprived of its national pastime — well, the Dodgers will have only themselves to blame.”
Kudos to Mr. Kaplan for his cleaver analogy and sarcasm. Welcome to the Brave New World of Republican politics – elections no longer matter. If they don’t like the result of the last election, they’ll just ignore it. And they’re not just going to sit it out and wait until the election next year for another chance at the bat. If Democrats won’t give them what they want right now, they’ll just shut ‘er down!
