Phishing Scam Seeks to Steal Credit Card Information, Identities from Southern Arizona Consumers

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona is warning of phones calls coming from (718)683-3104, claiming there’s a problem with the call recipients credit card, and that action must be taken to keep the account open.

Consumers who pick up the call hear an automated message that states that their credit card has been deactivated, then prompts the consumer to enter their credit card number, expatriation date, three-digit security code, social security number, and zip code.

Consumers who enter all the information are not only giving away their credit card information, they’re opening themselves up to identity theft as well.

The Sierra Vista Police Department told BBB they have heard from numerous consumers who received the call- all from the same telephone number- and that all the officers at the Sierra Vista station have received the call as well.

BBB Tips:

  •  Be wary of text messages or phone calls that request personal information. If you do not know (more…)

Warning: StubHub Email Scam Making Way Around Internet

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Many people have reported being hit by a scam email this morning, that appears to be from StubHub (it isn’t) and says it is charging your credit card a huge sum to pay for boxing tickets to a match in Nevada.

StubHub says this scam has been hitting them since 7 a.m. this morning. Anyone who has had a StubHub account (and even some who haven’t) may be at risk.

According to a StubHub, these are the precautions you should take:

  • If you receive the scam email, DON’T login. It may steal your passwords and then give thieves access to your StubHub account where valid credit card info may be stored.
  • Change your password if you have an account at StubHub – right away. Go directly to the StubHub site to do that, not through an email.
  • Send a copy of the scam email you receive to safety@stubhub.com so they can investigate.

This is what the email looks like:

With Hotels Booking Up For World Series, BBB Advises Fans To Be Alert To Lodging Scams

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

World Series baseball fever has taken hold in St. Louis and Dallas, and fans from all over the country are scrambling to find places to stay in both cities on game nights. Better Business Bureau has found several ads for hotel packages that raise suspicions of scams. BBB warns fans to beware of offers that don’t sound right.

Several ads for World Series hotel packages on a classified ad site claimed to offer tickets for a Rams-Cowboys game along with the hotel, a tip-off that the person who placed the ad may not be familiar with the teams in the World Series, the Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. Some ads are full of misspellings, which also can be a characteristic of fraudulent ads.

“Sports fans may be anxious to get a hotel room near the ballpark, without weighing the cost or the possibility that the advertised room doesn’t exist,” said Kim States, BBB President.

“Scammers may lure people by advertising low prices – or they may charge a premium by claiming that the hotel is close to the ballpark when it isn’t,” States said. “Others may offer tickets with the hotel room, but you have little or no way of verifying whether the tickets are real.”

BBB of Southern Arizona advises fans to ask lots of questions and be wary of an offer that requires wiring money. When you send money by wire, it is almost impossible to get it back or to trace the recipient, (more…)
