Bear Down…and Blog!

Current and former University of Arizona athletes are always making news and not always in traditional mediums. We scoured the Internet and found Wildcats online by visiting these lynx…

Ka’Deem Carey has quite a ways to go before he’s actually on the cover of the recently-released, highly-anticipated NCAA Football 13 — and not just the product of some sparkling photo illustration.

It’s not going to take video game numbers, however, for the Tucson native — who likely takes over as the Wildcats’ premier back this season — to gain a spot in Arizona football lore.

Carey needs 3,340 yards to eclipse Trung Candidate as the Wildcats’ all-time leading rusher.

A tall order for a player entering his sophomore year? Definitely; but it’s within reach.

Candidate wracked up 3,824 yards in just three seasons in the Pac-10, averaging 117 yards per game.

Carey pounded out 425 yards last season and led the team in rushing touchdowns (6) as a true freshman behind senior starter Keola Antolin. Antolin (568 yards) is now vying for a spot this summer with the Arizona Cardinals.

Carey needs 1,133 yards per his final three seasons to catch Candidate, meaning he needs to average roughly 95 yards per game for his career — less considering any bowl game appearances.

He wouldn’t need Bo Jackson-Tecmo Bowl-type numbers; he’d just need Bo Jackson Heisman winner numbers.*

Former Heisman Award Winners’ Career YPG:

Ron Dayne, 151.6

Ricky Williams, 136.5

Barry Sanders, 118.5

Rashaan Salaam, 113.2

Bo Jackson, 91.8*

Eddie George, 83.7

Mark Ingram, 82.9

Reggie Bush, 81.3

NEWS

Former Wildcat hoops stars Brendon Lavender and Kyle Fogg haven’t given up on their NBA dreams yet, despite not being selected in last week’s amateur draft.

Lavender, tied for sixth in UA history for three-point percentage, Tweeted over the weekend that he’ll play for the Atlanta Hawks’ summer league squad.

Fogg, who led Arizona with 14.5 ppg has signed on to play for the Houston Rockets this summer.

Inclusion on a summer league team isn’t a guarantee to make the big club. Think of it as an extended tryout.

Former Wildcat center/power forward Jesse Perry will likely head overseas to play when his pending legal issues are resolved.

Arizona leads the nation in draft picks (34) since 1988, even though no Wildcats were selected this year.

For just the third time in the last decade, the NBA Finals will not feature at least one former Arizona Wildcat. The Boston Celtics made sure of that on Saturday night, eliminating Andre Iguodala and the Philadelphia 76ers in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

It’s the first time a title matchup didn’t include an ex-Wildcat since 2007, when the San Antonio Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers.

All told, 11 Arizona alums laced up their sneakers for this year’s abbreviated hoops season. Five of them made the playoffs. Iggy was the last one representing Tucson after the Oklahoma City Thunder bounced Jordan Hill and the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

Iguodala averaged 12.9 PPG and 5. 7 rebounds and had 19 steals in the 76ers’ 13 games. He’s averaging 13.6 PPG in five trips to the playoffs.

His two free throws with 2.2 seconds left sealed the Sixers’ upset of the No. 1 seeded Chicago Bulls.

Last year’s NBA Finals saw Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks defeat Mike Bibby of the Miami Heat to become the first ex-Cat to win both an NCAA and NBA title.

Iguodala, who made his first NBA All-Star team this season, is already the subject of trade rumors that would land the ex-Wildcat in Los Angeles with the Lakers.

Hopefully the former Wildcat swimmer still feels that way days after this Tweet when South Africa decided against sending a 4X200 Freestyle Relay team to the 2012 Olympics, thus nullifying his spot in the pool at the Summer Games.

I don’t see enough cheerleaders or world class, Olympic volleyball outside hitters in my daily life.
