Bear Down…and Blog!

Current and former University of Arizona athletes are always making news and not always in traditional mediums. We scoured the Internet and found Wildcats online by visiting these lynx

Baseball history is rife with postseason heroes. But for every hero, there is almost always a goat.

On Monday night in Texas, former University of Arizona hurler Ryan Perry became the answer to a trivia question.

Texas slugger Nelson Cruz took the ex-Wildcat deep with the bases loaded to give the Rangers a 7-3 win in 11 innings and a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series over Perry and the Detroit Tigers.

Perry gave up four hits and four runs to suffer his first-career postseason loss. In Game One, the Marana High School alum struck out one and yielded no hits or runs in 1.2 innings of work — including getting Tucson native Ian Kinsler to fly out to left field.

Perry — and former Wildcat and current Tiger pitcher Daniel Schlereth — get their shot at redemption in Game Three tonight in Detroit.

Ten straight losses to FBS teams won’t bode well for many college football coaches. As Arizona’s Mike Stoops found out on Monday night, it can be downright costly – or fruitful, depending on which side of a $1.4 buyout you side with. See what Arizona Wildcat Nation is saying about the departure of Stoops, who leaves the Old Pueblo after eight seasons with a 41-50 record.

Update: Tucson’s Ian Kinsler helps Texas Rangers make history

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

The Lone Star State knows a thing or two about heat.

So, too, does Ian Kinsler, who may not be the sole star on the Texas Rangers, but he’s certainly their hottest hitter at the plate.

The Canyon Del Oro (Oro Valley, Ariz.) High School grad propelled the Rangers on Tuesday night to the first postseason series victory in the franchise’s 49-year history with a 3-4, 3-RBI performance, highlighted by a 2-run, ninth-inning home run.

The effort leaves him .011 points behind New York Yankees centerfielder Curtis Granderson for the top batting average (.444) in the ALDS. His 6 RBI and 3 dingers (tied with teammate Nelson Cruz) are a Major League best this October. One more hit and Kinsler would have won the hypothetical ALDS Triple Crown.

The Rangers  now hope Kinsler’s bat doesn’t cool off before Friday when Texas plays host to Granderson and the Bronx Bombers in Game One of the ALCS.
