Arizona alum Baffert makes history at Haskell Invitational

You can always tell when Bob Baffert is celebrating a win.

That’s because he’ll Tweet about where he’s eating.

So it must have ate him up inside to be in San Diego as his fellow horse trainers were powering through dinner down the Jersey shore.

For a guy with an estimated net worth in the paddock of $120 million — check that $120, 600,000 after his horse Paynter claimed the Haskell Invitational on Sunday in New Jersey – you’d expect Instagram pics from high-falutin restaurants.

Not Baffert, who Tweeted after the race from his home near San Diego:

The afore-Tweeted trio (including fellow University of Arizona alum, Todd Pletcher) were probably trying to rid their mouths of the Paynter’s dust, who galloped to an easy 3 3/4 length-win.

The score down the shore for Baffert is his third straight win at Monmouth (N.J.) Park and record sixth overall in the event.

He won the Haskell recently with Coil (2011) and Lookin’ at Lucky (2010).

Perhaps the dogs should be on Bodemeister’s stablemate Paynter. The colt eclipsed $1 million in career earnings with the win.

Baffert was on the opposite coast during the race. He was home in California after a March heart attack in Dubai limited his travel itinerary.

Wonder why…

PS – The above Tweet is an example of Baffert’s eating habits and not meant as a slant against Cracker Barrel. In fact, merely typing the last sentence has me pining for an “Uncle Herschel’s Favorite” with a “Wild Maine Blueberry Muffin” on the side.

Kentucky Derby: Baffert vs. Pletcher

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

The NCAA basketball champion Kentucky Wildcats were honored prior to this year’s 138th Annual Kentucky Derby. After the race, the odds are high that one of two former Arizona Wildcats will be the ones heralded at the iconic Churchill Downs.

Trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher have more in common then knowing to choose the University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry School in which to pursue a degree. The Arizona alums have become the symbols of excellence in the horse-racing world, amassing close to 16,000 wins and $394 million in career earnings combined.

NEWS

NCAA Selection Sunday into the ’Big Dance’ is always a fun day, regardless of the sport — or if you happen to be one of the programs left looking from the outside in at the field of 64 teams.

The NCAA announced its 2010 women’s volleyball tournament brackets on Sunday.

Among the opening round matchups is a Wildcat-on-Wildcat contest pitting the University of Arizona (20-11) against Northwestern (19-11) in the first round of the University Park, Pennsylvania Region.

The Wildcats square off against one another on Dec. 3 in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The victor advances to face the winner between the University of Northern Iowa and Missouri.

Arizona has never won an NCAA volleyball title. But that doesn’t mean the Wildcats are confident:
