Bear Down…and Blog!
Current and former University of Arizona athletes are always making news and not always in traditional mediums. We scoured the Internet and found Wildcats online by visiting these lynx…
With the success of University of Arizona alums in the world of horse racing, you have to wonder if there’s some sort of secret circle. Most likely, there isn’t.
The only secret circle Bob Baffert runs with is a horse. Secret Circle, the Baffert-trained horse collected the $500,000 purse for wining the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint on Nov. 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kent.
All told, Baffert had 10 horses in this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Two of them (Game On Dude and May Day Rose) finished as runner-up in their respective races.
Baffert wasn’t the lone University of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program grad in Louisville.
UA alum Todd Pletcher had 14 horses in the weekend’s 22 races, netting four runners-up (Shared Heart, Congo, Alma D’Oro and Stopshoppingmaria) and three third place finishes (Katz My Song, Sweet Cat and Her Smile).
Pletcher is the lead money winner this year, banking $15.6 million in purse money. Baffert is third overall with $12.6 million more in his bank account than he started the year with.
Combined, Baffert- and Pletcher-trained thoroughbreds have won more than 330 races in 2011 alone.
So, how does a guy who just won $500,000 on a horse race celebrate? At one of Louisville’s finest eateries, that’s where…
