The University of Arizona football team lost on Saturday to USC, but that doesn’t mean the weekend was lost for Wildcat Nation. Several former ‘Cats played major roles in the outcome of Sunday’s NFL games.

Rob Gronkowski put himself in the national spotlight and on the radar of fantasy football owners in need of a tight end, catching three touchdowns Sunday night in the New England Patriots’ win over Pittsburgh. Gronk is the first rookie in Pats’ history to score three times in a game. His 18 points tied him with Seattle’s Olindo Mare for the most points scored on Sunday.

Mike Thomas scored arguably the biggest touchdown in the league on Sunday, hauling in a 50-yard, Hail Mary pass as time expired to lift the Jacksonville Jaguars to an improbably 31-24 win over Houston.

Texan cornerback Glover Quin swatted the ball away, but directly into the awaiting arms of the ex-Wildcat wide receiver.

It can also be argued as the biggest touchdown of the Jaguars’ season and of Thomas’ career.

Afterward, Thomas was played the role of seasoned vet via Twitter:

“Wont ever forget this…but time to move on and focus on Cleveland!”

He then relented a bit in his next post:

“Whoooo what a game!!! That was big, man what a great way to win a game. The Jags come thru at the end. We’ll take IT!!!”

Former Wildcat Spencer Larsen also scored his first career touchdown on Sunday, connecting with Denver Bronco rookie quarterback Tim Tebow for the first scoring pass of his career as well.

Trevor Hoffman etched his name deeper into the MLB record books on Sept. 7 by nailing down the 600th career save.

The former Arizona Wildcat is the all-time saves leader, leading New York Yankee legend Mariano Rivera by more than 40 saves.

Not too shabby for a guy who played shortstop during his days as a Wildcat.
