Arizona-ASU: Territorial Cup is our bowl game

UPDATE: ARIZONA WINS TERRITORIAL CUP 31-27 OVER ARIZONA STATE

WILDCAT NATION REACTS

With three postseason games in as many years, the University of Arizona football team has grown accustomed to the spoils that fill bowl games.

One win in their last 14 FBS games dating back to November of 2010, however, will leave the Wildcats without their bowling shoes for the first time since the 2007 season.

Tonight’s Territorial Cup matchup against Arizona State, in effect, becomes Arizona’s bowl game.

“That’s the game you thrive on. What is better than a rivalry game? We’re not going to a bowl game,” said Wildcat defensive back Robert Golden.

“This is our bowl game right here, we’ve got to make the most out of it.”

To say the 2011 season has been a disappointment for the Wildcats would be an understatement.

Arizona (2-8, 1-7) is last in the PAC-12 South and coming off a demoralizing loss to Colorado. CBS Sportsline ranks the Wildcats 96th out of the FBS’ 120 teams — right behind Duke.

You could understand if the Wildcats came out less than motivated.

Then again, this is the 84-year-old Duel in the Desert — winner takes home one of the oldest rivalry trophies in the country.

“If you can’t get jacked up and ready to go this week, you might as well not even play,” said Wildcat wide receiver David Douglas.
