It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Martin Escobar!!!

by on Jun. 04, 2010, under Arts, Politics, Random humor

In 1999, I used to space-out in Ms. Stadler’s first period algebra class and stare at this hokey educational poster that read “Stand up for what is right, even if you’re standing alone.” I used to picture Superman in his iconic stance with his hands on his hips. BrandonRouthasSuperman

The last son of Krypton protecting the weak and fighting for justice. That image and saying stayed with me till this day. It’s very hard doing what is right and its even harder to do it alone because our society lives by “majority rules.”  In fact, thats how we make our laws and elect our presidents. However, just because the majority agrees that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. At one point the majority agreed that black people should be slaves, in another time in our history it was ok to persecute and kill people that the majority believed to be witches. The point being, it’s hard to go against the majority when you are the only one that is right. No wonder Superman keeps a secret identity. I’ve tried doing the right thing when I am the only one and I usually get crap for it.  So it’s really, really, really hard to be altruisitic sometimes.  It’s even harder to be Superman, yes, I’ve tried.

Recently, however, I got the chance to meet a guy that gets pretty close. A real guy, not an actor or a nut trying to fly, but a man trying to do the right thing. His job is to protect those that need protecting and to fight for justice.  However, he doesn’t stop when he clocks out, no this guy keeps it going even off duty.  In fact, he kinda looks like Superman too.  Big, strong boy scout that dresses in blue, police blue that is. The man I am referring to is Officer Martin Escobar. Police officer by day, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master by night and a 24/7 defender of justice.

Superm....er.. I mean Martin Escobar.

He even stands like Superman.

Unlike, the man of steel though, he is not taking on Lex Luthor. No this gentleman is taking on a far more nefarious nemesis… the state of Arizona. When the whole SB1070 fiasco came about, people rallied and protested, others left, an even larger majority said “what are we going to do?’  Martin Escobar DID something.  At the risk of losing friends, akin to brothers in the police force, and becoming an outcast in his own profession, he decided to stand up for what is right even if it meant he would be doing it alone. His plan: to sue the state of Arizona.  He’s probably going to get loads if money if he wins, that should be motivation enough, after all he is suing a state, right?  Sadly, no, Mr. Escobar will not recieve any monetary compensation if he wins, the only reward will be that this law gets repealed. In fact he will probably lose lots of money since he is doing this out of pocket. His main reason is that as a police officer this law forces him and other officers to use racial profiling in order to enforce it.  Many, have criticized his efforts and even mocked the humble policeman for his plight, but despite this he carried on. Can you imagine what his life would be like if he wore a cape and his undies over his pants? No respect whatsoever.  His efforts garnered so much attention that CNN decided to interview him.  So much has this man achieved on his own that the city of Tucson has now decided to be a co-plaintiff on his law suit. He’s not so alone now, Lex Brewer.

As a result, I could not help but track this man down and intrview him myself, I must admit the man made me nervous. It was like meeting, well, your hero.  And since The Citizen can now handle the cutting edge of video tech known as YouTube I decided to do it on video.

And because I am an equal opportunity blogger and believe that our non-English speaking citizens (yes, Sheriff Arpaio and Senator Pierce, we have Spanish only citizens) should understand this man’s opinion here it is in Español.

Officer Escobar did an english version of this video too but it was too large to upload. I will add it as soon as I can find a way to compress it and post it up on here.

I believe MALDEF is helping with the legal fees. I could be wrong. Just to correct your history, ( you probably zonedout there). The majority did NOT want slavery. At the very beginings of our nation a strong abolitionist movement wanted slavery abolished. It was economics pure and simple. The economies of the South swore the US would remain vulnerable if we did not allow them slavery. It was a compromise of language in the constitution that left open the ability of the 14th amendment to be passed 90 years later.
So please stop spouting a historical lie.

Escobar is an opportunist. I respect his profession and I respect his service, but this ‘challenge” to the law is him being used by the open borders lobby. It wont cost Escobar any money and he will be well financed by Grijalva and his lobbyists. He is no superman.

    • bermudez-shorts

Jimmy Kelley my biggest fan and most frequent commentator.  On to more pressing issues, Mr. Escobar is not getting any help from MALDEF, Grijalva, lobbyists, the Tri Lateral Commission, the Free Masons, Martians, the Loch Ness Monster or any other conspiracy theory who’s who that you can come up with. He is footing this all on his own.  As for the slavery thing just because there was a strong abolishonist movement in the early history of our nation doesn’t mean that was the majority.  Furthermore, by you stating it was “economics pure and simple” is a huge insult to the African American community. You are using the same excuse the South used to justify this terrible practice in our nation’s history. If it wasn’t a majority that supported slavery then why did most people even our founding fathers own slaves? They certainly didn’t move here with them, they brought them over later.  They were considered to be just like cattle, nothing more than another beast of burden on the farm.  Less then human. By granting them a simple basic right like freedom the issue is more than economics, it’s about granting someone their humanity.

Martin Escobar is not an opportunist. I realize you have a hard time tolerating points of view that oppose yours ( “5. I will delete, not edit, a post (comment) I deem innappropriate or unacceptable to ME.”  Thats from your blog buddy) but you don’t have to make false accusations about someone you have never met.  Officer Escobar is only concerned about being able to do his job correctly, which is justice, his job is to be just.  He took an oath to protect his community and he takes it seriously. This law will force him and others in his profession to be unjust.  This isn’t about immigration to him, it’s about protecting his community and being able to do his job. Lastly, I never stated he was the Superman or even a superman. I said he got pretty close. Besides, Superman is a fictional character like Santa or the Easter Bunny, Mr. Escobar on the other hand is very real, and we should be greatful to have someone of his character not only protecting us, but being a part of our community. He is truly one of Tucson’s finest. Oh and thanks for reading.

So according to you, Mr Escobar is absolutely, under no circumstances receiving any financial aid from any group to fight his court battle? Just want to make sure.

Right, as far as I know from the information he has supplied me with up until now he is doing this out of pocket.

Hey BS: My late uncle Wilber was a forger, albiet not a very good one. I always loved him, even though he was, and had a soft spot in my heart for all people who were forgers like him.
When I was a cop in Anaheim, do you think it would have been OK for me not to arrest uncle Wilber if I caught him forging a check? or a friend in the same act? Would it make me a Superhombre like Escobar?
Just wondering?  –  Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

    • bermudez-shorts

      Ferraribubba,
So you knew he was a criminal? I assume you did in fact arrest him, correct?  I have no problem with arresting  people that have committed crimes, I am all for it. I do have a problem with arresting people just because they LOOK like they may have committed a crime. Especially, if you base it mainly or racial and ethnocentric stereotypes. That’s racial profiling, which is what this lawsuit is about NOT, I repeat, NOT about immigration. Reasonable suspicion is real. If a cop drives past a house with a broken window and a guy is taking property out of that house throught the broken window, the cop has reasonable suspicion of a home invasion taking place. If he drives down the street and he hears screaming between a man and a woman and objects breaking and sees objects being thrown, the cop has reasonable suspicion of domestic violence. In both of these cases the police can investigate. If a cop drives down the street and sees 5 Hispanics walking along on the side of the road with garden tools and tattered clothes what reasonable suspicion does he have? None. They aren’t doing anything wrong. Thats reasonable suspicion. Also you are not just curious you are trying to put me in a corner using circular logic. It’s a great mental excercise so thanks for the workout FB. As for being a superman, well, like I stated before its impossible since you would be trying to be a fictional character, but you are certainly willing to try. Who knows you might look good in tights.

It’s a bird,it’s a plane,it’s an un-American racist in a city of Tucson police uniform. Enough with the poor me ,everyone is down on me mentality of todays so-called Americans. SB 1070 is a bill that is supposed to help  stop the illegal criminals and send them home to their own countries whether it be Vietnam or mexico or wherever. Stop making a hero out of a complete idiot, our city and state are both broke and we do not need these racist morons on the city counsel or this cop wasting tax money on lawsuits.

  • Ferraribubba

Hey BS: When I was a cop, I swore an oath to enforce ALL the laws that were on the books, not just the ones that I happened to agree with and think were fair. It’s just as simple as that.
I wasn’t paid to play God, or Superman, or anybody else and decide which laws were not to be enforced because I happened, on this day, not to think that it was fair and just. I enforced them all, come hell or high-water.
That, my friend, is up to the lawmakers and courts to decide, not some petty little cop on the beat like me . . . or even ‘Superhombre’ Escobar.
Get it?  –  Yer pal, Ferrari Bubba

  • markz

If the officer feels he can not enforce the laws of the land , as he has sworn to.  HE SHOULD RESIGN!

  • JoeS

What is with the script in the replies?

  • Ferraribubba

Kudos to Marie! She hit the nail right on the head. If ‘Supercop’  El Escobar can’t find it within himself to enforce all the laws of the state . . . he should have the common decency to turn in his badge and resign.
And if the Chief wasn’t anything but a spineless joke, he’d fire him.
Next to the Old Pueblo’s Chief, the current Chief of San Francisco is looking more like Dirty Harry every day since the operation. <g>

Hey Joe: The font looks like the world looked like to me after that weird dude passed me the fruit punch at the Grateful Dead Concert I attended back in the ’70s. You’ll get used to it after a while.

Speaking of history, any time ANY law is proposed by a republican/conservative that has ANYTHING to do with race, it MUST be looked at from the perspective of the southern strategy.  Any analysis that does NOT take that into account is necessarily flawed. Which is why any argument that it is all about economics, while interesting to debate, is false. It isn’t JUST about economics. To anyone that has been paying attention to history, it is also about the exclusion of those that are deemed “other” than white people.

    • Ferraribubba

Hey Daniel: Is there any truth to the rumor that that the conservative republican lawmakers in the Arizona legislature are showing up wearing white sheets with pointy hoods these days? From what you’re saying, it sure sounds like it.
