How'd I do? – Review of my week 5 football picks

That win percentage keeps inching its way down. This will likely be the last week I stay in the .800 range, but as I've said before, if I pull off a .700-plus win percentage I'd be pretty happy with that. More »

Every kid gets chance in youth football

When I played youth football back in the 1970s – now I'm dating myself – coaches didn't have to use all the players on their roster. Or they would get in for only a few plays. Kids often felt "left out" after practicing hard all week. That's not the case now. More »

Attack of the Atheist - sorta

Call it coincidence (although others might use the words "fate" or "God moment") but the day I decide to blog - ever so briefly - about Sam Harris, I get an e-mail about the good Mr. Harris and a link to his 98-percent-excellent essay against the rise of Sarah Palin to the position of Republican VP nominee. Why Faith Matters according to the rabbi

"Human beings are unsettled and often cruel. Religion does not make them perfect, but serves to make them better. Having survived both a brain tumor and lymphoma, being engaged in daily counseling people of trouble and in grief, I know there is music to life that I did not create but I can hear. The proper response to it is gratitude, goodness and praise." More »

A Thousand Cranes

Sadako Sasaki, an atomic bomb child victim in Hiroshima Japan, tried to fold 1000 paper origami cranes before she died at age 12.  That is the subject of a play opening tonight at PCC Proscenium Theater.  It is presented in partnership with Tu Nidito, a Tucson agency that assists families with terminally ill children (and the subject of my 2/7/08 blog "When a child dies".) Tie for McCain?

For the moment, at least, I'll let the pundits pummel each other over who won the debate between Obama and McCain. One thing I'll go on the record with, though: McCain's tie was just about the worst sartorial gaffe I've ever seen by a presidential wannabe. More »
