Death without notice

While the death of any friend or relative is heart-breaking, it is especially difficult when it is unexpected. A long illness allows for reconciliations, forgiveness, and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to say goodbye and let the person know how much you love him or her. When it is a random happening, your options for those conversations are ripped from you More »

Attack of the Atheist - sorta

Call it coincidence (although others might use the words "fate" or "God moment") but the day I decide to blog - ever so briefly - about Sam Harris, I get an e-mail about the good Mr. Harris and a link to his 98-percent-excellent essay against the rise of Sarah Palin to the position of Republican VP nominee. Why Faith Matters according to the rabbi

"Human beings are unsettled and often cruel. Religion does not make them perfect, but serves to make them better. Having survived both a brain tumor and lymphoma, being engaged in daily counseling people of trouble and in grief, I know there is music to life that I did not create but I can hear. The proper response to it is gratitude, goodness and praise." More »

Crammed and worried

It is standing room only in Room A313 of the UA main library as classified staff continue to pour in the doors to meet with UA President Robert Shelton and Provost Meredith Hay to get details on the university's Transformation Plan. One staff member, who wouldn't give his name, said everyone is scared of losing their jobs. I think UA is about to break fire-code in this room of cramped and worried staff members. More »

The risks of being a religion writer

Every so often, you read a blog that makes you want to stand up and scream, "YES! I know exactly what you mean!" That's how I felt when I took 20 minutes today to work on my other job here at the Citizen, blogging about "God stuff," and came across More »

Need Tuition? Sell your virginity

I guess you have to give her credit for creativity, but a 22-year-old San Diego woman auctioning her virginity to raise fund to get her master's degree in marriage and family therapy still seems like a bad idea. Although, according to some reports, she's not the first to have done so. More »

Porn Sunday

"With MySpace, Youtube, Paris Hilton and the Girls Next Door, porn has become America’s new entertainment. With divorce, lost jobs and sexual dysfunction, pornography is fueling a new breed, the porn generation … We have a national day of prayer, national day of fasting, the church needs a national day of porn, with direct and honest talk about the issues surrounding pornography – we have to get accountable.” More »

Is your sex live less than you'd like it to be? Do you think the only option for exciting coitus is in a seedy motel room with a stranger you met at the porn shop?
