Big Apple dominates the Beardies



New York City fell just short of a clean sweep of the 2009 James Beard Foundation Awards.
Of the nine national awards in the Restaurant and Chefs category, the Apple made off with eight:

Outstanding Restaurateur Award: Drew Nierporent, Myriad Restaurant Group, NYC

Outstanding Chef Award: Dan Barber, Blue Hill, NYC

Outstanding Restaurant Award: Jean Georges, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, chef/owner, NYC

Rising Star Chef of the Year Award: Nate Appleman, A16, San Francisco

Best New Restaurant: Momofuku Ko, David Chang, chef/owner, NYC

Outstanding Pastry Chef Award: Gina DePalma, Babbo, NYC

Outstanding Wine Service Award: Le Bernardin, Aldo Sohm, wine director, NYC

Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional Award: Dale DeGroff, Dale DeGroff Co., Inc., NYC

Outstanding Service Award: Daniel, Daniel Boulud and Joel Smillow, owners, NYC

Best Chef - Pacific: Douglas Keane, Cyrus, Healdsburg, Calif.

Best Chef - Mid-Atlantic: Jose Garces, Amada, Philadelphia

Best Chef - Midwest: Tim McKee, La Belle Vie, Minneapolis

Best Chef - Great Lakes: Michael Symon, Lola, Cleveland

Best Chef - Northeast: Rob Evans, Hugo's, Portland, Maine

Best Chef - Northwest: Maria Hines, Tilth, Seattle

Best Chef - Southeast: Mike Lata, Fig, Charleston, S.C.

Best Chef - Southwest: Paul Bartolotta, Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare at Wynn Las Vegas

Best Chef - South: John Currence, City Grocery, Oxford, Miss.

The Food Writer might refine his post to inform readers that JBF jingoistically restricts its awards to USA:

Quote...the James Beard Foundation Awards are the highest honors for food and beverage professionals working in America.
