No not this Dean Martin – the guy on the right.Dean Martin wants to be governor and he’s not going to let a little complication – we already have a governor – get in his way.
This Dean Martin is not the dead crooner, but the Arizona state treasurer. As treasurer, he is third in line of succession – and he’s taking advantage of the opportunity.
Gov. Janet Napolitano has not yet returned from the Democratic Convention. And Secretary of State Jan Brewer has headed off to the Republican Convention. Both can easily be reached by phone, if necessary.
But Martin today pulled an Al Haig, letting Arizonans know that we are safe with him briefly in charge.
Martin sent out a breathless press release this today: “Arizona State Treasurer Dean Martin as Acting Governor has been in communication with The Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA), Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) today regarding damage from last night’s storm.”
A storm hit Phoenix Thursday leaving thousands without power. Martin assured us that “The Treasurer with DEMA is actively coordinating between Maricopa County, local cities, and other state agencies for relief.” Whew!
Martin also noted that some buildings had roof damage and others had water inside.
Martin is likely to be a gubernatorial candidate in 2010 when Napolitano’s term expires. Now he can brag about his on-the-job training.
