Big cross-country meet at the starting line

The starting gun is about to sound on Los Mezquites Cross Country Invitational, a huge two-day meet for Tucson's elementary, middle-school and high-school runners. Last year, more than 1,000 athletes participated.

Elementary and middle school runners compete Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Kennedy Park, 3700 S. Mission Road.

Saturday at 8:30 a.m., high school runners compete.

Good job, Schwalbach! With this you've raised general awareness (well maybe only a tiny bit, but intent is important) that there are ways other than the costly (albeit profitable for local media and other merchants) football/basketball/baseball rut for kids to get what matters most developmentally: fitness, goals, thinking and acting in sequence, determination, parental involvement.

I just hope you forgive my run-on sentence...
