New Eats: Amerenos

Amerenos Little Italy, a popular, family-run eatery that closed its original location at East 22nd Street more than a year ago, has reopened at 2933 E. Grant Road.

Hours are 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 10pm Tuesday through Sunday. Phone number is 721-1210.

Amerenos is on the east end of the Decorator Square Shopping Center on the northwest corner of Grant and Country Club. The center has some vacancies these days, so parking is a cinch.

Along with all the standard Italian favorites and five different homemade sauces - Marinara, Bolognese, Aglio de Olio (olive oil & garlic), Fra Diavolo (spicy), Rose (marinara and cream) and Alfredo -  the menu includes a nice selection of entrees for the vegetarian and/or heart healthy members of the dining party. Examples include:
  • Penne Puttanesca ($16) - Sautéed black olives, capers and fresh roma tomato in homemade marinara, served over penne pasta.
  • Broccoli Pinoli ($16) - Toasted pine nuts sautéed with fresh broccoli and roasted garlic, served over linguine
  • Capellini Pomodoro ($15) - Freshly diced roma tomatoes and fresh basil sautéed in light olive oil w/ roasted garlic and angel hair pasta
  • Farfalle Funghi ($15) - Fresh mushrooms sautéed in olive oil w/ fresh garlic, served over bowtie pasta

As a long-time Amerenos patron at its prior location, I must echo my profound delight that it has re-opened. We went on opening night because I could hardly wait (it has been 2 long years) and the veal dish and seafood fra diavolo we had were simply marvelous, worthy of big-city praise. For everyone who had dined before at Amerenos, come on back and prepare for resumed delight. For anyone who is new to Amerenos, come discover! I have no connection to the restaurant in any way except as a delighted diner who is absolutely ecstatic that they have made a return to the Tucson restaurant scene. Hooray!

We are so happy Amereno's has finally reopened, even though it's a long drive from our far eastside home. Be aware that they have not received their liquor license yet and will not for at least a few weeks. If this is important to you, call them first to inquire. All desserts on the menu are not available, and the creme brulee is totally weird--it says "in a chocolate shell" which we took to mean a cup, but it's covered in chocolate and looks like a Ding-Dong! It was good, but it's not creme brulee. Our favorite has long been the chicken or veal marsala, and it hasn't changed--thank heavens!

Char, we're often in your neighborhood. We were just spoiled when Amereno's was only 5 minutes from our house, instead of 30. But it's well worth the trip.

And I know there's no apostrophe in Amerenos name--but it keeps sneaking in because it sounds like a possessive to me!
