There are some big high school football games around southern Arizona Friday night. Any chance there will be an upset as big as the one last week when Amphi beat Sabino 7-6?
Of the following four games, which underdog has the best shot at pulling off the upset?
- Salpointe at Ironwood Ridge (IR = underdog)
- Amphi at Santa Rita (AMP = underdog)
- Palo Verde at Sahuarita (SAHR = underdog)
- Canyon del Oro at Catalina Foothills (CF = underdog)
In
my picks published in Thursday's paper, the only upset I picked was Ironwood Ridge over Salpointe. In order of most likely to happen of those four games, here are my upset picks:
- Ironwood Ridge
- Sahuarita
- Amphi
- Catalina Foothills
Obviously I think the Ironwood Ridge upset is possible (but it would most definitely still be an upset).
I know some might argue Sahuarita is not an underdog at all on their
home field. A team in only its second year playing at the Class 4A
level against a perennially good Palo Verde team is still an underdog.
It isn't a knock on them to be an underdog in year two against a team
like Palo Verde. They win here, they take themselves out of the
underdog category against anyone else on their schedule. I think Sahuarita has proven in all but one game they could be ready to take that next step. So, that is a possibility, but I'm still siding with Palo Verde.
With Amphi, I don't think there's much chance the Panthers will beat Santa Rita, but I didn't think there was a chance last week either and Vern Friedli shut me and everyone else up with that.
As for Catalina Foothills, well, I included that as a game on this list since it will essentially be for the Sonoran Region championship and Foothills is a much improved team and playing at home with CDO coming off a big game, but I'm still thinking there is next to no chance they even keep it within a couple touchdowns with the Dorados. Sorry, Falcons.
