How'd I do? Review of my Week 7 football picks (Yes, I am gloating edition)

Well I got Salpointe scoring 14 points in a loss to Ironwood Ridge correct, but who saw 41 points coming?

Other than maybe those fans in the picture to the right? (Photo of Ironwood Ridge fans cheering on their defense Friday night by Francisco Medina/Tucson Citizen).

Judging from the reader comments and e-mails I received over the past few days after I predicted an Ironwood Ridge win, not many people thought the Nighthawks could even keep it close, let alone have a chance at pulling off the upset. And I can't find anyone who thought they'd drop 41 on a Lancers squad which hadn't allowed double digit points more than once this season (17 points to Gilbert).

But as I said in my preseason preview column, I think Ironwood Ridge is a team capable of earning a trip to the 5A-II state championship game. Nobody seems to want to give the Nighthawks credit for being one of the state's best, but they are. Period.

In the three other games southern Arizonans were watching with much interest:

  • VernPa had a shot at pulling off another stunner when, with under two minutes to go in a game at Santa Rita and Amphi down 21-20, Friedli went for two and the win instead of a tie. Amphi's conversion failed and a failed onside kick set Santa Rita up to punch in another TD to seal the deal with a 28-20 win, but Amphi continues showing why I think they're headed back to the playoffs this year (also in that preseason column linked above).

  • Catalina Foothills pulled off another impressive loss, keeping the powerful Canyon del Oro Dorados to just 14 points (one on a fluke fumble return by an offensive lineman). Foothills kept this one much closer than I thought they would and get another tough test next Friday when they play undefeated Santa Rita.

  • At Sahuarita, Palo Verde had absolutely no problem with a 4-win Mustangs squad many were very high on after putting up gaudy rushing numbers and 163 points in four wins this season. While Sahuarita is a decent team, many fans, I think, conveniently overlooked the fact those four wins came against four teams that have four of the weakest defenses in southern Arizona so far this season – Cholla, Nogales, Catalina and Desert View.

So enough ramblng, here's how I did this past week:

Geoff, im sure you recieve tons of letters from fans telling you how good a player from their school is and for you to give them the spotlight. But Amphi linenbacker Ron Huff is a special talent. His Dan Moore-like weight room strength and aggresive tenacity put him among the top linebackers and hardest hitters in southern arizona. Could you shed some light on any info you have on him. Im a believer in his talents. But no one will belive me just becuz i said so. It would really make Ron legit if you could acknowledge him for the player he is. Could you please tell us what you know about him.

Yeah Sahuarita lost, I feel that Palo Verde beat us with their game plan (just like Santa Rita), they used an on side kick at every kick off and kept Allonte's great run back ability out of the game. Sahuarita started on its own 10 to 30 yard line on every kick off. While I do have to give Adam Hall his due, Sahaurita was with out a Healthy Allonte Singfield and missing starters Shawn Glover at line backer and wide reciever/ corner back Tony Hilderbrand both who are out with injuries, I wonder what the score would have been if they would have been there. Robert Madril along with several others did a good of keeping it as close as it could be. Everyone is making a big deal at Adam Halls 2 touchdowns that were called back because of penalties,if I remember right both were holding which allowed Adam to get the runs in the first place.
But Sahuarita still lost
Keep your heads up team, you played hard

Dont think so Tinner. The first TD called back was on a kickoff return. Adam was well ahead of the penalty, which was a block in the back about twenty yards behind him. The second was also a kickoff return which was a holding call. However, the hold was on the other side of the field, far away from hall.

Mustang Fan, Shawn and Tony are decent players but I doubt it that those two would have made a difference . Maybe on the run, but on passing downs ...? See the film on Nogales and Santa Rita when it came down to covering fast and tall recievers. This coaching staff won't or can't make adjustments. Why ? is it personnel or what... They seem to panic and forget that they are run first and pass second team. Their two losses they tried to pass, but when they decide to run they have success. When they run the ball on the left side they seem to always score , haven't you noticed that. Also why would kick the ball to Adam Hall right after you scored...?

it is what it is , Im sure you heard from the crowd in the stands, your not the only one..Win as a team lose as team. but the important thing is that we support theses young men. All is not lost, they get by Douglas and handle Amphi next week ..they can finish 8-2. Maybe my comments on those two kids were a little harsh because I know there trying hard and it is frustrating, because they deserve
better. But hang in there Mustang Fan , lets see what happens Friday nite.

It has been a while but I have to say I think there could of been a difference with Tony H and Shuan G. Shaun has proven him self on defense. He is a player this team needs. Well for Tony, kid has speed. Boy loves the game. I have watched him for the last few years playing. I dont undertsand why they do not give him the ball. He has leg power and used to be the high scorer of the games. I dont understand this coach but Allonte and Tony carring the ball will ensure more touchdowns. Its unfortunate Tony is out.

I'm not questioning these two players heart or love for the game . I have watched this team on defense for the last two years and they cannot stop the pass when comes to talented teams who can pass and have good recievers. Amphi will be the game , can they stop the wishbone..? They had trouble with the old straight T formation against Palo Verde
