Week 8 HS football rankings

The home stretch is officially upon us. Here's where I think the best of southern Arizona rank after seven weeks of high school football this season based on a combination of how they've played and how good I think they can be at their best.

WEEK 8 – Grammer's So. Ariz. Football Top 10

Rank. Team (record, this week's opponent)
  1. Ironwood Ridge (5-1, at Tucson High)
  2. Salpointe (5-1, host Rincon/University)
  3. Santa Rita (6-0, at Catalina Foothills)
  4. Canyon del Oro (6-1, host Marana)
  5. Cienega (4-2, host Sahuaro)
  6. Palo Verde (6-1, host Amphi)
  7. Sunnyside (4-2, host Casa Grande)
  8. Sabino (5-1, at Nogales)
  9. Amphi (3-3, at Palo Verde)
  10. Catalina Foothills (3-3, host Santa Rita)
Others knocking on the door: Nogales (5-1), Tucson High (3-3).

I pretty much agree with your rankings Geoff. However, I think Nogales needs to be in the top ten. They did not lose, although struggled against the Cougars. I would move Foothills off the list and Nogales on.
Another thing, Sabino was being knocked by many for having a tight game against Catalina Foothills, and losing to Amphi. Well after last weeks efforts by both Foothills and Amphi, it is obvious that Sabino is still a very good team. In fact they looked much better against Foothills offensively then CDO did. They should not be written off just yet to win the division.

Actually, I apoligize, I also think Sunnyside should be ranked 8 and Sabino 7.

I think that Sabino/Sunnyside swap is a good argument and could happen even if/when both teams win this week. We'll see how they play.

You're right about those two big struggle-games on Sabino's schedule, though. Amphi and Catalina Foothills, two teams I now have in my top 10, certainly don't look like awful teams for Sabino to have struggled against after all.

As for Nogales, they certainly could be back in if they show any defensive capabilities at all against Sabino on Friday and make a game of it.

How does the predictive power of your rankings compare with Massey Ratings? Time for a smackdown with Ken Massey, Geoff Grammer?

Preseason and season rankings really dont mean much. The REAL rankings are the ones that come out after the playoffs when the dust has settled. Last years Sabino team had me convinced they were the best southern arizona team after they finished the seaoson 10-0. Their first round loss proved the rankings are fun and a nice indicator but really cant tell you much. The REAL rankings are the post playoffs rankings that include a teams playoff run or lack there of.

Valid point watchmen. The final postseason result are what matters. You do have to admit though, even the greatest of sports teams are upset at times.
