Week 10 HS football rankings

There may be no UA football this week, but those who care at all about the high school game have absolutely nothing to complain about as Friday night presents two games which have all the makings of what could end up being two of the top five games of the year.

Both Ironwood Ridge, my top ranked team, and Santa Rita, my No. 3 team and the area's lone remaining unbeaten, both play road games for region championships on the home fields of bitter rivals, both of which are also ranked in my top 10. Upsets there would certainly lead to some changes in the poll next week.

As for this week, however, what can I say? Nothing that happened last week changed my mind about how the top 10 football teams in southern Arizona should be ranked. The top 10 is exactly the same as last week.

There are a couple teams on this list that are very close to one another and some might argue a swap of Sabino/Amphi at the No. 8/9 spots would make sense since Amphi beat Sabino head to head, since Sabino is coming off a loss and since Amphi is coming off a blowout win. Still, I just couldn't quite bring myself to making that move this week and having teams tied in your own poll is a cop out, so here's the list:

WEEK 10 – Grammer's So. Ariz. Football Top 10

Rank. Team (record, this week's opponent)
  1. Ironwood Ridge (7-1, at Sunnyside)
  2. Salpointe (7-1, at Sierra Vista Buena)
  3. Santa Rita (8-0, at Palo Verde)
  4. Canyon del Oro (8-1, bye week)
  5. Cienega (6-2, at Nogales)
  6. Sunnyside (6-2, hosts Ironwood Ridge)
  7. Palo Verde (8-1, hosts Santa Rita)
  8. Sabino (6-2, hosts Desert View)
  9. Amphi (4-4, at Sahuarita)
  10. Catalina Foothills (4-4, at Pueblo)
Others knocking on the door: Tucson High (4-4).

PV ranked 7th, but they are a good solid team? They are going to beat down Santa Rita Friday night. I guess they will be ranked 6th after that? Cienega barely beats Sabino and is ranked 5th, makes perfect sense.

Sorry thought I would jump on the High School Blogs and stir some emotion, no U of A football this weekend so this is the next best thing.

It does make perfect sense. It isn't just who you beat last week, it is over the whole season. first lets look at the loses, PV lost to sunny slope and barely beat Douglas, while cienega does have two loses they are to chaparral (at the last sec on the road) and CDO two of the toughest teams in the state. Winner, Cienega has a much tougher schedule. Second 4AII v.s 4A1 lets not even go there. lets not forget what hassey's teams at Sahuaro and cienega have done to PV over the yrs.

I agree 1guy, the Badgers started out flat & fat vs. Buena , last week. Gave up 2 td's, then straightened themselves out, and scored 38 unanswered. Gave up a td w/ 1:27 left against the 2nd team defense. Maybe If they blowout Casa Grande this week, maybe they crack this list.

If they win versus casa grande tucson high is top ten no question im sure grammer would concur with us on that. They cant have any lapse of judgement versus them though and let it slip away.

The only complaint is what the heck is palo verde doing 7th? They have probably the best player in the state and have lost one game??Id have them at fourth myself. Cienag and Sunnyside for sure dont deserve to be up on palo verde.

Hucks - what you said in some of your comments are cool and are to a degree correct. But bringing in Sahuaro and Cienega as PV dominators, not really Dude. Does not pertain to this thread, so whatever!

PV's was not mentally prepared for Douglas every team has a let down.

Big game this Friday against the Eagles, this will tell the story, the rest is draft.

The best argument for movement on my poll that I'm willing to acknowledge is that Tucson High should probably be in the top 10. They have a solid offense and have as good a case to be there based on their body of work as anyone.

A road win at Casa Grande will be a very good win for the Badgers.

I could have some tough decisions to make at the bottom of the poll next week. I don't see Catalina Foothills or Amphi slipping up enough to warrant them being dropped off the list, but I also think Tucson High is deserving of some props if they get to 5 wins this week and essentially clinch a 5A-I playoff spot.

As a response to mmueller6 on Palo Verde deserving a higher ranking. Head to head, I don't think Palo Verde beats any of the teams I have ranked ahead of them. That said, as I've done all season when I've been proven wrong, Palo Verde will certainly see some upward movement this week if they pull off the upset over Santa Rita.

If this was a list of the top 10 players in southern Arizona, Adam Hall would be No. 1.

Geoff,
I hope you're right about Tucson clinching a playoff spot, with a win tomorrow night. These guys have endured a lot and have worked very hard to right the ship at Tucson.
I am pulling for a win vs. CG and a big upset next week, for the 5A-1 South automatic bid. The power rankings are a tough thing to go through with all of the points and possibilities. One thing for sure, is Tucson the area, is not lacking for quality 5A football, with Salpointe, the Ridge and Sunnyside, et al.
Good Luck to all the 'South' teams in the playoffs!!
Props to you, Geoff for making so many winning picks during the year!

Geoff, Ok. I'll take that response. Espceially the one that states "When PV beats down the Eagles tonight". Some movement will be needed.

Thanks

Comparing teams out of conference is apples and oranges. Comparing 4a1 and 4a2 teams even more so. 4a1 schools have more enrollment and therefore a larger pool of talent to build from. Just remember, it takes more than talent to win consistantly. It takes solid teaching of the fundamentals and a game plan that can force any opponent to do the things they don't want to do. The consistant winners have the coaching staffs that excel at those qualities.
